Keeping the OUT in ScOUTing

One of the changes with the new Cub Scout program that rolled out June 1, is the emphasis on the importance of connecting boys back with nature -- in short, they want to get them camping!  In fact, going on a cam pout is now a requirement to earn your rank badge with Wolf, Bear and Arrow of Light dens.  Plus, let's face it, BOYS WANT TO CAMP! Our pack plans two (tent) camp outs a year.  One in the fall and one in the spring.

So, be sure you save the date for the Pack 1910's October camp-out.

WHO:  Pack 1910 Scouts and their families
WHAT:  Fall Festival and Haunted Hayride camp out
WHEN:  Friday, October 16-Sunday, October 18
WHERE:  Sid Richardson Scout Ranch, Bridgeport, TX
WHY:  To work with your son to earn his rank, to get outside, to camp, to have fun!
COST:  $22 per child, $10 per adult
RSVP DEADLINE:  Payment and registration forms due to April, Sunday, October 11.
PAPERWORK:  The registration form, your payment and your BSA Health Form must be on file.  The registration flyer can be found here.

We reserve the camping area for BOTH Friday and Saturday night, but the official camp out activities do not begin until around 1pm on Saturday.  By allowing families to come Friday night, we are able to be more flexible and have more boys and families who can participate in the camping program.  In fact, there is even a place on the registration form to indicate Friday night camping - please fill this out.  Camping Friday and Saturday night is a great way to get to know your Pack families.  Please note, the form says to turn it into the Longhorn Council -- DO NOT DO THIS!  Forms need to be turned into April so that she can register us as a pack.  Payments via check should be made out to LONGHORN COUNCIL.

Activities begin around 1 on Saturday and include items like bounce houses, leather crafts, archery, bb guns, pumpkin carving, etc.  The haunted hay ride is fun and generally NOT that scary, but you know your child and, as such, it is not a mandatory requirement and they may stay back at the campsite with you until our group returns.

Boys' Life Magazine

Subscribe to Boys' LifeOne of the items available to Scouts that some Packs consider optional is the Boy's Life Magazine.  Our Pack feels so strongly about the benefit from this publication that we actually include a subscription for every single Cub Scout with their membership fees.

The official magazine of The Boy Scouts of America, Boy's Life Magazine also has an awesome web presence.  Check them out here.

Their website has fun interactive pages with silly quizzes, instructional videos (want to learn to tie a knot?), gear spotlights, recipes, and so much more!  It's definitely one to bookmark and add to their "parent approved" lists for them to visit over and over again!

LAST CALL for Fossil Rim

Contact April here IMMEDIATELY.  Payments must be made when you RSVP.  If you RSVP, that's your guarantee.  PayPal invoices can be issued, you can pay via credit card or you can bring a check (made payable to Pack 1910) to April or Chris' house -- whatever is convenient!

WHO:  Cub Scout Pack 1910 Scouts and family members
WHEN:  Saturday, September, 19 from 10am to Sunday, September 20 at 9am
WHERE:  Fossil Rim Wildlife Center, Glen Rose, Texas
COST: $93.50 per person and includes, lunch, dinner, 3 education programs, a guided safari, accommodations in air conditioned/climate-controlled bunk houses, breakfast and a hike (weather permitting)

The information on Fossil Rim can be found here.  Again, if you want to go, contact April immediately!

Awesome Sign Up Night!

PThanks to all you guys who came out to keep us all company on the annual Cub Scout Sign Up night!

Thanks to Ed Attel for securing the rockets from the Longhorn Council to ensure that the boys new to scouting are completely aware that they ARE going to have a blast -- quite LITERALLY!

There will be a few e-mails, lists, forms and such flying your way for the next few weeks until we tackle all of the paperwork.  However, once that gets handled, we should have smooth sailing for the year ahead!

We have an excited and invigorated group of leaders ready to jump in and make this the best program for the boys in Pack 1910... probably the best Pack in ALL OF KELLER!  We hope to set the standard by which all Packs will judge a fantastic program!

That does require a lot of effort, and so we will be looking to YOU -- our awesome parents -- to step in and fill the gaps.

The first sheet I wanted to provide a link to for you was the NEW CUB SCOUT CHECKLIST FOR PARENTS.  This is simply a way for you, as a parent, to track the few items that need to happen to ensure they they do.  I'm a checklist kind of girl.  I figure who can't use a checklist to make sure they're staying on course.

In short, it makes sure you have your registration form turned in (so that we can get you added to our system).  Complete the BSA Health Form for registered adults and youth.  Be sure you're checking out our website frequently!  Meet with your den leader. Pay those registration dues.  One check and you're golden until next December!  Visit the Scout shop for your uniform components and insignia.  Volunteer for something!  Read the Scout Handbook!  Complete Youth Protection Training Online ASAP and provide April, John or Christopher with a copy of your completion card.

Welcome aboard!  We are SO excited to have you join!!

Cub Scout Sign Up Night

It's time to kick off a new year in Pack 1910 and we want YOU to join us!  Our annual Cub Scout Sign Up night will be Tuesday, September 1 at 6:30 p.m.

If you picked up a flier at Ridgeview Elementary's Meet the Teacher or at our Raingutter Regatta, this is the night we've been talking about!  Are you ready to see what all Pack 1910 has in store for YOU this year?  Be sure to stop by Tuesday night, September 1, and sign up with the Pack!

WHO:       Boys in 1st - 5th grade in the Keller and surrounding areas
WHAT:     Cub Scout Pack 1910 Sign Up Night
WHERE:    First United Methodist Church of Keller, Hallelujah Center
                1025 Johnson Road, Keller
COST:     $115 through NEXT December!  ($40 for this year and $75 for all of next year)
WHEN:      Tuesday, September 1, 6:30 pm - 8:00 p.m. come and go
WHY:        Because -- IT IS FUN!

Scouting promotes and encourages family togetherness.  Time is a valuable commodity and what better way to spend it than investing in lasting memories with your son.  More than ever, today’s families struggle to find time to spend together. Cub Scouting helps to support your family by providing ready-made opportunities for you and your son to do things together.
Your son needs to belong to a group of boys his own age. Through this sense of belonging, he builds his self-esteem and learns to get along with others. As a parent, you want to be assured that the groups that your boy joins will teach values consistent with good citizenship, character development, physical fitness and spiritual growth. The Boy Scouts of America has been weaving these lifetime values into fun and educational activities since 1910.
In a society where your son is taught that winning is everything, Cub Scouting teaches him to “do his best” and to be helpful to others.  Servant leadership.

He will learn to live by the code of “On my honor.”

But... we know that boys do not join Cub Scouting to get their character built.  Boys join Scouts.... because it's fun!!!

Our program is full but it's not complete without YOU!  If you are unable to attend Cub Scout Sign Up Night, please complete the informational form on the website and someone from our membership committee will be in touch with you shortly. However, the best way to start is to jump in with both feet and be ready to have fun!

Your adventure starts Tuesday!  We look forward to meeting you!

Oh yeah...TO JOIN CUB SCOUTS!  If you signed up for more information or you took a flier with all of our information on it -- it will lead you back here, to our blog.  And I'm here to tell you our sign up night is...

TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 1 at 6:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m.

First United Methodist Church Keller
Hallelujah Center
1025 Johnson Road, Keller

If you have an questions, please don't hesitate to contact April Driggers, your Committee Chair, or John Waskow, your Cubmaster, respectively at adriggers@gmail.com and/or 1910cubmaster@gmail.com

The format for the evening will be come and go with a sign-in at the door and then you will work your way through the few tables we have set up to talk ... discover... see our activity calendar... sign up... grab a rocket for our November rocket launch and you're SET!

We are so excited about all that's in store this year.  We just KNOW it's going to be our GREATEST YEAR yet!!!

This is a FANTASTIC way to get established within the pack immediately so that you can be in gear to go camping with in September at Fossil Rim.  More information about that trip can be found by clicking {HERE}.

Fossil Rim Overnighter is on the Horizon

Mark your calendars and save the date Cub Scouts!  Our over-nighter at the Fossil Rim Wildlife Center in Glen Rose is on the horizon!

This is a new experience for our Pack and was added to our "special events" rotation so that our boys and their families could enjoy a varied program that provided unique opportunities of all variety.

Fossil Rim Wildlife Center is nestled amidst the live oak thickets, limestone outcroppings, and stands of juniper in the rustic hills of Somervell County.  It's a sanctuary for endangered species. Their goal is promoting the preservation and procreation of threatened/endangered species, environmental awareness, and a recreational and educational experience for people of all ages.

We will check in Saturday morning, September 20 into climate-controlled cabins and then enjoy a full program of activities.

Lunch, dinner, a campfire program, a safari adventure and three educational experiences along with breakfast are included with your payment of $93.50 per person.  Credit cards are accepted but will incur a service charge.

One of the educational adventures we will learn about is capture techniques used by the vets at Fossil Rim.  Being a wildlife veterinarian there isn't easy, and in this program our Scouts will learn about some of the dangerous tasks the vets undertake in the field.  They will learn what it means to work with wild animals, learn about what training and precautions must be taken and hear real stories of what goes on behind the scenes at the park.  Each Scout will be able to test their "vet-ability" as they participate in a hands-on activity as well.

Another educational opportunity we will have will be a class called "Dyeing From Nature." Scouts will be taken back through time to an era when man turned to nature for his needs.  On this journey of discovery, they will have an opportunity to experiment with native natural dye -- one that is even still used today on a daily basis.  For this class, each kiddo needs to bring a pre-washed, white t-shirt! (Hand-made souvenirs!  What can be better?!)

I just know this will be one of the adventures everyone will remember with Pack 1910. Make sure you log into ScoutBook and RSVP today!

Through Scouting you forge relationships and become a family.  It's not just a leader running a den that has nothing to do with the other dens... In Cub Scouts, we all share a common bond not only with our Cub Scouts dens but with all families in our Pack.  This accepting, loving, supportive family atmosphere is something we could all use a lot more of.  Thinking about what we do?  Come check out Scouting today!  Click here

We will be having our Cub Scout Sign Up Night September, 1, 2015 at 6:30 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church of Keller's Hallelujah Center.  Please, if you know someone you think would be a great asset to our family of 1910 Scouts, bring them along!  We look forward to meeting you!

Aquatic Science

Texas Parks and Wildlife homeDo you have a budding aquanaut?  Texas Parks & Wildlife Department have created a new website called Texas Aquatic Science for students to study the aquatic ecosystems in Texas.  They actually have a pilot program rolling out throughout the state but the student portion is located online and has information on everything from why water is essential to live, conservation, lakes & ponds, the Gulf of Mexico, bays & estuaries and so much more.

You can explore the various careers available in water and aquatic science as well.

I encourage you to check it out here!  It looks to be a great resource for everyone!

June Core Value - Perseverance

The Core Value for the month of June is Perseverance.  Being able to stick with something and to not give up, even if it is difficult -- is hard!  Providing boys with experiences that may be a little out of their comfort zone in order for them to learn how to see things through is how we can help them celebrate perseverance in their own lives.

Boys will realize that they must push through and continue to work hard to improve their skills when they want to succeed!

Teaching children the benefits of hard work and trying is easy... have them set small goals which will help them reach a larger one.  Saving their allowance, for instance, a few weeks at a time to make a larger purchase.  How about finishing a long chapter book or their first novel.  It's met by being determined to finish.  Setting reachable goals and staying at it!  Those video games may beckon their attention, but they must push through their distractions to reach that goal.  How about playing the guitar?  It's easy to want to pick it up and sound like a rock star but -- that's not going to happen!  It requires dedication, practice, setting small goals, hard work, determination... in the end, they will persevere!

The EDGE method we use in Scouting is a great way to help leaders demonstrate perseverance.

Explain
Demonstrate
Guide
Equip

By teaching boys skills this way, having them set their goals and then cultivating an attitude of gratitude helps them persevere... on their own!  When you are witness to the "I got it!" or the "I did it!" -- it's an AMAZING thing!

Perseverance -- think about it!

Memorial Day

I wrote this post for last year's observance and it serves as a genuinely poignant reminder of the freedoms we take for granted and the sacrifice so many have made to our country.  I wanted to reshare it with you all.  Happy Memorial Day.

While many Americans will celebrate Memorial Day with hot dogs, hamburgers and a day off... let us not forget what this day is really all about.  Memorial Day is not about 20% off sales and lounging by the pool.  Memorial Day is a day of honor and respect for our fallen... and sometimes forgotten.

Price of Freedom
From the US Memorial Day website, Memorial Day, originally called Decoration Day, is a day of remembrance for those who have died in service of the United States of America. Over two dozen cities and towns claim to be the birthplace of Memorial Day. While Waterloo N.Y. was officially declared the birthplace of Memorial Day by President Lyndon Johnson in May 1966, it’s difficult to prove conclusively the origins of the day.

Regardless of the exact date or location of its origins, one thing is clear – Memorial Day was borne out of the Civil War and a desire to honor our dead. It was officially proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11. “The 30th of May, 1868, is designated for the purpose of strewing with flowers, or otherwise decorating the graves of comrades who died in defense of their country during the late rebellion, and whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet churchyard in the land,” he proclaimed. The date of Decoration Day, as he called it, was chosen because it wasn’t the anniversary of any particular battle.

On the first Decoration Day, General James Garfield made a speech at Arlington National Cemetery, and 5,000 participants decorated the graves of the 20,000 Union and Confederate soldiers buried there.

I encourage all Pack 1910 families to engage in something meaningful this weekend to help instill in our Cubs a purpose for this day.  Let's raise a generation that doesn't forget. Why not join the Virtual Boots On The Ground.  Let your children create a virtual avatar and join with others across the country for in the National Memorial Day Parade.  They will have a live feed on the site this day.  The parade is at 2pm EST.  More on the parade can be found here.

Unfortunately, the Mt. Gilead Cemetery on Keller-Smithfield Road that hosts the annual annual memorial day celebration and flag retirement has had to cancel their event due to the field conditions.

We have added to our Pack Calendar a special entry on Memorial Day.  At 3pm -- no matter where you are, what you are doing or whose company you are sharing -- please stop and take a moment to gather your family and friends together to remember those who have fallen in service to our great nation.  Memorial Day is more than a cookout, it's a time to be in thought for those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice as well as their families.  The National Moment of Remembrance is at 3pm.  Unite with Americans everywhere to show that we have not forgotten that freedom isn't free.  We are the home of the free BECAUSE of the brave!

Here is a Memorial Day Tribute you could watch with your family.

Transition to Scoutbook

Last year we beta tested an up-and-coming advancement software program called ScoutBook.  At the time it still lacked some of the key features that we desired (and used) as a Pack.  Fortunately, in the past year, ScoutBook has not only made all of those features part of their software package, but they are continuing to add more features and enhancements that make all of our jobs easier!  Yay!

scoutbook logoApparently, we weren't the only ones who noticed how remarkable this program was going to be -- the BSA actually bought ScoutBook in April of this year.  If you'd like to read a real-time review of a Pack who transitioned to the program, click {HERE}.

SO, please note that once we have had our bridging ceremony at the end of this month, that will be the END of ScoutTrack recording and advancement within our Pack.

During the month of June we will have a full software migration to ScoutBook.  Rest assured that all of your son's advancements, achievements and awards will be uploaded into ScoutBook for their official record.  You will start receiving notifications once your son's profile has been imported and activated into the Pack's records.

Change is hard.  Software learning curves can be frustrating.  Plus, I know that we are all accustomed to our current method of advancement, messaging and calendar notifications, but trust me when I tell you that you will LOVE all of the features that ScoutBook has to offer!

In the meantime, I encourage you to visit the site (please don't create an account so that we do not duplicate your son's records within the system) to just see all of the amazing features ScoutBook will provide to our Pack!

May's Core Value

Along with introducing you to this month's theme of Health & Fitness, I would like to also take time to tell you about an initiative directed by the Boy Scouts of America to challenge our Scouts -- the ScoutStrong PALA program.

WHAT IS “PALA”?
  • PALA stands for the Presidential Active Lifestyle Award, a program of the President’s Council on Fitness, Sports and Nutrition (PCFSN).
  • PALA is designed to motivate participants to be physically active on a regular basis by allowing them to participate in activities they enjoy, as well as improving their eating habits. Earning a PALA is definitely doable by anyone at any fitness level.

What is the SCOUTStrong™ PALA challenge?
In 2011, the Boy Scouts of America aligned with the PCFSN with the shared goal of together promoting good health for America’s youth. The SCOUTStrong™ PALA Challenge, a Scout-specific PALA challenge, is one of the results of this alliance.

Who Can Participate in the SCOUTStrong™ PALA Challenge?
This challenge is for anyone, from students to seniors, but it’s geared towards everyone associated with Scouting from Cub Scouts to parents and just about anyone in between.

How Does the SCOUTStrong™ PALA Challenge Work?
  • To earn the SCOUTStrong™ PALA Challenge award, a participant is required to meet a daily activity goal of 30 minutes per day for adults and 60 minutes a day for kids under 18 for at least five days a week, for a total of six weeks. Participants can take up to eight weeks to complete the program.
  • The participants pick their activities and strive to reach their goals, logging their physical activity along the way.
  • More than 100 indoor and outdoor activities count toward the daily requirement, including walking, running, aerobics, gardening, and canoeing, as long as major muscle groups are engaged at a moderate to vigorous activity level.
  • Also, each week the participants will focus on a healthy eating goal. Each week participants should add a new goal while continuing with their previous goals.
  1. Make ½ your plate fruits and vegetables.
  2. Choose lean sources of protein.
  3. Consume more whole grains.
  4. Consume less salt.
  5. Choose low- or no-fat dairy.
  6. Eat more seafood.
  7. Drink water instead of sugary drinks.
  8. Eat smaller portions.

Starting the SCOUTStrong™ PALA Challenge will help participants:
  • Commit to daily physical activity—and stick with it.
  • Commit to making healthier food choices—one goal at a time.
  • Set realistic goals to encourage fitness and healthy eating habits for a lifetime.
  • Track their progress with either a paper Personal Activity Log (PDF) or by accessing the Online Activity Tracker after creating an individual account.

How do I get started with the SCOUTStrong™ PALA Challenge?
Participants can enroll and track their progress either online with a free Online Activity Tracker or on a paper

Active Lifestyle Activity Log

ONLINE:
  • Begin by visiting www.scouting.org/SCOUTStrongPALA
  • Use the appropriate dropdown menu to pick the state that the council/organization he or she wants to be affiliated with is located in.
  • Use the appropriate dropdown menu to pick the council/organization with which he or she wants to be affiliated.  It should take you HERE.
  • Click START YOUR PALA CHALLENGE.
  • The participant should now be at the PALA page of the affiliated council/organization. They should click CREATE AN ACCOUNT.
  • Complete the required fields and click REGISTER.
  • Participants will now arrive on their activity tracker home page, which they will see each time they log into their account. From this screen, they can track their activities, join a group, see their award progress, and adjust their account preferences.
  • Upon completion of the six-week program, participants will receive a congratulatory email from the President’s Challenge. Participants should print and submit this email to their Scout leader.

Start Saving These Items!

We will discuss this further at the bridging picnic, but to kick-start our fall program, I'm asking for donations of clean, used items.  Click {HERE} to access a printable list.  We are seeking your help in gathering the listed items.  I will need multiples of them so the more we can get, the bigger and better the projects!

We are asking for things like cereal boxes, empty pill bottles, rubber bands, egg cartons, corks, etc. Feel free to drop them as you collect them at April's house (leave on the porch) or bring them to any of the summer events.  These are needed by early September.  We distribute a kit to each Scout at the September Pack meeting to create SOMETHING (anything) and display it at the October Pack meeting.  The creativity of these boys is MIND NUMBING!!!  You'll be impressed!  So, help 'em out!  start saving today!

Your help is greatly appreciated!!

Pack 1910 Summer Adventures

Last year we polled the scouts to ask them what kind of activities they wanted for their Cub Scout program.  We asked... they answered and thus, our four-year summer rotation of activities was born.

We set up a specific four-year schedule of different activities so that, for your Scout's entire Cub Scout career, he wouldn't be participating in the same thing summer after summer.

Cub Scouts is a year-round program and our Pack makes the most of each summer to bring opportunities for our Scouts to stay engaged and involved all year long!

We will be utilizing the Sign-up Genius to track RSVP's for these events.  This helps the adult coordinators know which Scouts to expect so that no one is left behind.  Also, a few of these event require advance deposits.  Once you RSVP, you will be contacted to confirm how you wish to pay.  PayPal invoices can be sent via e-mail or checks mailed to the treasurer.

One important thing to note -- Please be sure you are RSVPing -- even if it is a "no" -- so that we know you received the invitation information.  The courtesy of a reply is greatly appreciated.

Please understand that many of these programs we are planning on require not only a minimum number of participants and as stated previously, a deposit.  If you RSVP and are not able to attend, you will still need to pay your portion as it likely has already been covered by the Pack or, alternatively, find a family to go in your place and have them reimburse you. Most of these events do not allow refunds.  Thank you for your understanding.

The Sign-Up Genius will have all the information for each specific activity.  This is merely for you to save the date!

Pack 1910 Summer Program 2015:

June
8-12:  Mustang District Day Camp.  See THIS PAGE on our website that is dedicated to all things Day Camp.
27:  Stargazing Party at the Fort Worth Museum of Science & History.
28:  Burger's Lake picnic and swimming.

**Did your scout register for Day Camp?  If so, they're on their way to earning the Outdoor Activity Award.  Read all about the requirements for this awesome award here. Please note, however, that since the ENTIRE Cub Scout program is changing at the end of this month, the new requirements for this award to coincide with the new achievements can be found on THIS document.  Scroll to Page 3.  ANY Scout can earn this... You would be working on the requirements for the rank they are advancing to.

July
12-15:  Cub Scout Resident Camp, Sid Richardson
15-18:  Cub Scout Resident Camp, Sid Richardson
25:  Stargazing Party at the Fort Worth Museum of Science & History.
31:  Overnighter at the Perot Museum

August
8:  Horseback trail ride around Lake Grapevine
22:  Annual Raingutter Regatta, pizza party and ice cream back to school bash

...that by joining us for just one event a month, your scout is eligible for the National Summertime Achievement Award?  These are rank specific, color-coordinated very cool special pins to place on their uniform to show off their involvement.

If enough of his den participates, they will earn the Summertime Award for their DEN! And, collectively, if enough of our Scouts participate all summer long, our PACK earns the National Summertime Pack Award!  How cool is THAT?  Awards will be presented at the Scout level during the September Pack meeting.
