Pack 1910 Summer of Scouting

 

Pack 1910 likes to provide our families with plenty of opportunities to stay engaged and active all summer long. Why? Because Scouting is year-round fun! We take great pride in ensuring that we have a well-rounded annual program full of excitement with new adventures each year for your family to experience together.

In fact, our Pack has set up a specific five-year rotation of different activities so that, for your Scout's entire Cub Scout career, he won't have to participate in the same events summer after summer.

As in years past, we will be utilizing Scoutbook to track RSVP's for these events. This helps the adult coordinators know which Scouts to expect so that no one is left behind and that your son receives credit for awards and advancement. Also, a few of these event do require advance deposits. Once you RSVP, you will be contacted to confirm how you wish to pay. PayPal invoices can be sent via e-mail or checks and/or cash can be delivered to the event coordinator.

One important thing to note -- please be sure you are RSVPing -- even if it is a "no" -- just so that we know you received the information. Don't make me a sad bear!

Please understand that a few of our programs require not only a minimum number of participants and as stated previously, but also a deposit. If you RSVP and are not able to attend, you will still need to pay your portion as it likely has already been covered by the Pack or, alternatively, you may find a family to go in your place and have them reimburse you. Most of these events do not allow refunds. Thank you for your understanding.

If enough of his den participates, they will earn the Summertime Award for their DEN! And, collectively, if enough of our Scouts participate all summer long, our PACK earns the National Summertime Pack Award! How cool is THAT? Awards will be presented at the Scout level at the September Pack meeting.

Super Cub Scout Summer Adventure Passport 2020

We think all Cub Scouts are superheroes and we're giving them a chance to prove it this summer.

The Covid-19 quarantine and social distancing really threw a wrench into all the fun we had planned to finish out the 2019 Scouting year but ... have no fear because the SUPER CUB SCOUT ADVENTURE PASSPORT IS HERE.

Each summer, our Pack usually plans 3 or more activities per month for us to do together to enable our Cub Scouts not only to stay active all summer long, but also to earn the National Summertime Achievement Award (pictured below). This award is a rank-specific pin that can be earned each year by participating in at least one Pack-organized activity in June, July and August.

Obviously, we can't do much of what we'd planned for this summer due to social distancing and the fact that several of our activities aren't even open yet to full capacity or that the guidelines for attending are a little too extreme / activities too limited to think we'd get a good turn out. So, we created a summer bucket list of fun for you and your Scout to do together... all while working toward something super awesome -- an award! Your Scout gets an award for having fun with you?!  Win/Win.

Each theme has a 3x3 box of activities. Pick one theme to complete each month. Have your scout pick activities that he wants to participate in.  His goal is to complete a tic-tac-toe for each theme. (Don't feel limited to do just three -- there are LOTS of fun activities to do together.)  The purpose is the journey... not only the prize.

If your scout feels like being extra Super... have him complete a tic-tac-toe in ALL of the themes and he will also earn a Super Hero patch for his brag vest!  These will be awarded in September.

Cub Scout and Webelos Resident Camp

There are so many opportunities all summer long to keep the OUT in ScOUTing! One of those is Cub Scout and/or Webelos Resident Camps provided by the Longhorn Council. Outdoor Adventures and Camping for Cub Scouts at Cub Scout and Webelos Resident Camp! Registration is open!

A great perk of attending -- your Scout can earn his Outdoor Activity Award.  Day Camp and/or Resident Camp is mandatory to earn this.

Pack your bags and join us for camping adventures and Cub Scout summer fun! Three Webelos sessions (for Webelos and AOL) and three Cub Scout sessions are available. Cub Scout and Webelos Camps help bring outdoor fun and learning to your Cub Scout summer! Camps take place at Worth Ranch near Palo Pinto and Camp Tahuaya near Belton. You’ll go rock climbing, go swimming and have fun water fights each day! Try our fleet of new Sit-on-Top Kayaks at Camp Tahuaya. Hike Kyle Mountain at Worth Ranch.

Cub Scout Resident Camp and Webelos Activities:

Leaders and adults attending Resident Camp who would like to help teach or staff programs should contact the Camping Registrar at camping@longhorn.org

You’ll spend lots of time in the pool and fighting water battles. All Cub Scouts and parents are invited to bring water blasters (not shaped like a gun), squirt bottles, water balloons,etc. Leaders and parents should keep the water toys, except during designated water battles.

All tents, meals, eating utensils, program materials and equipment are provided by the camp for each camper. The camp does not provide cots or mattresses for the campers. A limited number of cots may be rented for $5 per camp session on a first-come first-served basis.

If you’re the only member of your Pack attending camp, you can be an “Explorer” camper. An adult camping partner, must accompany each “Explorer” camper, in accordance with BSA’s Cub Scout Family Camping rules. You’ll make new friends and camp with other “Explorer” Cub Scouts and parents from Packs all over the Longhorn Council

PARENT ORIENTATION MEETING
The orientation meeting for adults coming to camp, will be held at 7:00 p.m. at the Longhorn Council offices the Wednesday before your camp session starts. Orientation Meetings for Worth Ranch sessions will be held at the Hurst office. Orientation Meetings for Camp Tahuaya sessions will be held at the Waco office and the Hurst office.

LEADERSHIP REQUIREMENTS
All adults (18 and older) must turn in a completed Camp Adult Info Form to the Camp Director on arrival at camp. Each Pack, Den, or family attending must turn in a Texas Camp Adult Roster prior to arriving at camp.

All units in camp MUST BE under the direct leadership of two adults at all times, one must be at least 21 years old and the other at least 18 years old. Adults may rotate with other parents or leaders; however, at least two qualified adults must remain in camp with the unit 24 hours daily while in camp. All adults in camp must have a current BSA youth protection card (good for two years).

REQUIRED HEALTH FORMS
Every adult and youth camper must have a completed BSA Medical form, Parts A, B, and C. This form does require a doctor’s exam. The Health Department requires immunization dates and parent signatures on all health forms.

Deposits
A non-refundable deposit of $25.00 per person attending with their unit or $30.00 per Explorer and adult, along with your completed reservation application is due by the Initial Deposit and Registration Deadline. The deposit applies to your total camp fee; there is no difference in the final fee for Explorer campers.

After the initial deposit deadline, a late fee of $10 will apply. Individual reservations and fees are accepted until the late registration deadline. After the late registration deadline, no reservation will be accepted without the Camp Director’s permission.


HOW TO REGISTER
There are two ways to register Cub Scouts and adults for Resident Camp.

• Register as a Pack. The Pack’s Cubmaster (or other leader) can select youth and adults from their pre-loaded roster and add them to their Resident Camp registration. Contact the Camping Registrar, camping@longhorn.org, for assistance.
• Register Individually. Set up your own family’s registration account and enter all of the data for each person you are registering.

Jump Into Scouting!

It's time again for another fun summer outing with Pack 1910!  This time, we are headed to Jumpstreet Indoor Trampoline Park in Colleyville!

WHO? Pack 1910 Scouts, Siblings, Friends and Parents -- yep! Scouting is for EVERYONE!

WHAT? Jumpstreet indoor trampoline park -- time to get your jump on!

WHERE? Jumpstreet Colleyville

WHEN? Tuesday, July 26 from 6-8pm

WHY? Because it's fun! Plus -- it's exercise... AND IT IS INDOORS! (Anyone else ready for this heat to end!?!)

COST? The event is $12 per person payable at the door.

DRESS CODE? Please wear your pack t-shirt -- and socks! Socks are required.

NOTE:  A waiver must also be signed for each child participating. (Choose the Adult / Child) waiver.  Using their online form, you can complete waivers for multiple children at the same time.

They have printed waivers there, obviously, you can sign as well. No worries.

I would recommend bringing a water bottle and a small stringed backpack or something for them to keep that and their shoes in. LABEL EVERYTHING. Leadership there will help try to keep an eye on anything but just know that they will need to be responsible for their belongings.

Parents are welcome to stay and visit or you may drop and enjoy dinner and return for pick up.

LEADERS/PARENTS: Please RSVP on Scoutbook for yourself ONLY if you will be choosing to stay with April at the facility with the kids as a point of contact if they need any assistance over the jump time-frame (Please wear your Pack t-shirt).

Thanks to those scouts who joined us for the first-ever Cardboard City Lock-In at the Family Life Center this Saturday!  We talked a little about homelessness, city planning, recycling and had some fun making some awesome shelters!  Take a little look-see.

 

 

 

 

 

On Top Of The World

Thanks to everyone who joined us at the GeoDeck outing Saturday.  We sure felt like we were standing on top of the world while visiting one of the most iconic parts of the Dallas skyline. 

We had amazing outdoor 360-degree panoramic views from 470 feet up above downtown Dallas.  We got to look through high-definition zoom cameras, played with interactive touch screens, used their observation deck telescopes, and got some fun digital photos to boot!

With great conferences, a legendary setting, and activities for spouses and children, it truly is the ultimate destination for Scouting families.

You, the Scouter, want to be the best possible leader for your Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts, Varsity Scouts, Venturers or Sea Scouts. After a week at the beautiful Philmont Training Center in New Mexico, you will be. You’ll learn alongside like-minded Scouters from across the country in conferences designed for anyone in Scouting: newbies all the way to the most-seasoned veterans.

Your spouse can come, too. S/he will enjoy a week of fun — museum visits, local history, American Indian arts programs, pottery-making demonstrations, guided nature walks and programs, tours, trips to nearby towns, fishing and more.

And your children? They’re in for a real treat with carefully designed, age- and ability-specific programs conducted under the leadership of trained staff. I speak from experience when I say your children won’t want to leave when the week’s over.

Though family members go their separate ways during the morning and afternoon, they reunite for meals and in the evenings for dinner and family activities. There will be plenty of stories for each to tell about all the fun they had.

Who teaches Philmont Training Center conferences?

No less than the best volunteers and professionals from across the country.

These are the people who “wrote the book” — in some cases literally — on Scouting. I’m talking top-level trainers and Scouters, many giving up vacation time to share their knowledge with you.

There’s even one course — Engaging Millennial Parents in Scouting — taught by Bryan Hayek, this article's author and Bryan On Scouting.  He's co-teaching that Aug. 7 to 13 course with his dad, the BSA’s former national training chairman (and father of two millennials).

Who can attend Philmont Training Center?

Any registered Scouter; there’s no other prerequisite. PTC is suited for brand-new Scouters and seasoned veterans. There really is something for everyone.

Who else will be in my session?

One of the best parts of a Philmont conference is the opportunity for shared learning among the participants.

That means you will network with and learn from Scouters from across the country. And in today’s Facebook-connected world, the connections made at PTC will extend beyond the week spent in New Mexico.

What will my family do?

Never want to leave, that’s what. The family program component is unparalleled in or out of Scouting. My first exposure to Philmont was attending a family program while my dad took a training course. My sister, mom and I were inspired to return to Philmont again and again.

Scouts and non-Scouts of any age can experience the magic of Philmont.

Parents can bring children, grandparents can bring grandchildren, wives can bring husbands and husbands can bring wives. From 2-month-olds to 90-year-olds, there is something for everyone. All for way less than that place with the mouse.

What’s the PTC like?

It offers world-class facilities, comfortable lodging with private hot showers, great food prepared by staff members, historic museums and southwestern history — all with the Sangre de Cristo Mountains as a backdrop.

The summer weather is perfect, with highs in the 70s and 80s and lows in the 40s.

When are these sessions held?

Every week, all summer long. Week 1 is June 5 to 11. Week 11, the final week of the summer season, is Aug. 14 to 20.

PTC offers one fall conference week: Sept. 18 to 24.

How much does it cost?

Less than your typical family vacation.

2016 Philmont Training Center fees (include conference materials, meals, lodging, and activities):

• Conference Participant: $530
• Non-Conference Adult (20+): $375
• Mountain Trek (Ages 14-20): $415
• Children at PTC (Ages 14-20): $315
• Children (Ages 6-13): $200
• Children (Ages 0-5): $100
• NAYLE participant: $395 (Hurry! NAYLE is filling fast)
• STEM Youth Conference: $395

Registrations are accepted at any time throughout the year, and limited scholarship funds are available.
