Cub Camp 2023 Registration is Open

Registration is open for the 2023 Cub Camp sponsored by the Longhorn Council. There are multiple dates and locations available, but the one specific to our Mustang District is being held from June 5-7 at Heritage Church of Christ. Early registration is $90 per Scout and $10 per Adult volunteer; early registration ends on May 8th, after which Scout registration fees will be $115.

Outdoor Activity Award and Day Camp

One of the best parts of Scouting is the outdoor program -- it's awesome and that is very intentional! Our goal is always to keep the OUT in scOUTing!

Another fun perk of being involved is collecting cool insignia and patches. The Cub Scout Outdoor Activity Award is one of those special awards that can only be earned by attending one of the District-sponsored Summer Day Camps or by attending one of the Cub Scout or Webelos Resident Camps. Resident Camps are overnight experiences held at one of the Council scout camps.  Longhorn Council is NOT hosting a resident camp this summer, so I encourage you to attend Day Camp!  

Speaking of Day Camp! Our summer day camp is organized by some great volunteers whose only wish is that your Scout has an exceptional experience.

Mustang District Summer Day Camp is held annually and is a themed 3 day day camp adventure that will take place June 13-15 (Monday - Wednesday) at Heritage Church of Christ. The cost is $60 for Scouts and $75 for non-Scouts (so, yes, your Scout can bring a friend!) If that timeframe doesn't work for you, there are other weeks available at area districts. Check those out here.

Attending Day Camp will enable your Scout to earn the Outdoor Activity Award pictured below.

Tigers, Wolves, Bears, Webelos and AOL Scouts are eligible to earn this award which is sewn onto the uniform pocket flap.

Today, however, I'm specifically talking about Day Camp! Our summer day camp is organized by some great volunteers whose only wish is that your Scout has an exceptional experience.

Mustang District Summer Day Camp is an annual themed week-long adventure that will take place Monday - Thursday at Camp Burnett in Southlake, usually the first Monday after school is released for summer. The cost is about $100 per "camper" and that cost could be reduced greatly by participating in our ongoing fundraiser for Boon Supply!

Attending Day Camp will enable your Scout to earn the Outdoor Activity Award pictured below.

Tigers, Wolves, Bears, Webelos and AOL Scouts are eligible to earn this award which is sewn onto the uniform pocket flap.

Cub Scout Outdoor Activity Award

This is one of the COOL awards that is a patch sewn directly onto the pocket flap. It can be earned EVERY YEAR of your Cub Scout's scouting career with different requirements for each rank. The first year is the patch, after that it's pins that are pinned onto the patch.

First and foremost, to earn this award -- attendance at CUB SCOUT DAY CAMP OR RESIDENT CAMP is a must! So, have YOU saved the date for Day Camp? It's an AWESOME 4-day experience for the boys and the Mustang District puts on one of THE best and largest Day Camps in our Council! Click HERE for more information on Day Camp and how to register.

Back to the Outdoor Activity Award. . . Scouts would start working on this award after school is over this year and therefore, it will apply toward their NEW Scout rank which they begin working on the first day of summer. They will have the ENTIRE YEAR to meet the requirements of that year's rank-specific criteria. Since Day Camp and/or Resident camp are mandatory for this award, now is a GREAT time to save the date so your Scout can earn this award!

TIGER Complete the Backyard Jungle adventure from the Tiger Handbook, and complete four of the outdoor activities listed below.

WOLF Complete the Paws on the Path adventure from the Wolf Handbook, and complete five of the outdoor activities listed below.

BEAR Complete the Bear Necessities adventure from the Bear Handbook, and complete six of the outdoor activities listed below.

WEBELOS: Complete the Webelos Walkabout adventure from the Webelos Handbook, and complete seven of the outdoor activities listed below.



Outdoor Activities for all Ranks
These activities must be in addition to any similar activities counted for rank advancement, and can be accomplished as a family, den, or pack.

• Participate in a nature hike in your local area. This can be on an organized, marked trail or just a hike to observe nature in your area.
• Participate in an outdoor activity such as a picnic or park fun day.
• Explain the buddy system and tell what to do if lost. Explain the importance of cooperation.
• Attend a pack overnighter. Be responsible by being prepared for the event.
• Complete an outdoor service project in your community.
• Complete a nature/conservation project in your area. This project should involve improving, beautifying, or supporting natural habitats. Discuss how this project helped you to respect nature.
• Earn the Summertime Pack Award.
• Participate in a nature observation activity. Describe or illustrate and display your observations at a den or pack meeting.
• Participate in an outdoor aquatics activity. This can be an organized swim meet or just a den, pack, or family swim.
• Participate in an outdoor campfire program. Perform in a skit, sing a song, or take part in a ceremony.
• Participate in an outdoor sporting event.
• Participate in an outdoor interfaith or other worship service.
• Explore a local city, county, state, or national park. Discuss with your den how a good citizen obeys the park rules.
• Invent an outside game and play it outside with friends for 30 minutes.

But the important information you need NOW is:

WHO: Cubs entering 1st grade in the fall - 5th graders
WHAT: The BEST Day Camp in our Council
WHERE: Harvest Church on 377 in Watauga
WHEN: June 4-7 from 8 am - 4 pm daily
WHY: Because it's a BLAST
HOW MUCH: it's about $100 per camper** and includes a t-shirt, patch, cap, all program supplies and insurance. There will be an EARLY BIRD REGISTRATION discount. More information to be announced on that!

Please note -- We are participating in the trash bag fundraiser as a way to let Scouts earn money to pay for and/or offset this fee. For every sale, 35% goes toward their day camp fee (or if they're not going to day camp, toward another event fee). 

**We NEVER want Scouting to be a financial burden to our families nor a reason for your Scout to NOT attend Day Camp so if there is a need, please participate in the fundraiser to show your commitment and request and complete a campership form. That should be submitted to Christopher  Mahanna or April Driggers. The Registration Fee for Daycamp will be discounted. There are a limited amount of camperships available, but understand they do want to know that you are participating in the program (fundraising) to help subsidize. We treat these in a very discreet, confidential manner.

Volunteers Wanted!

Our Scouts want to go to Day Camp. Online Day Camp registration will soon be live! For every 5 youth signed up for Day Camp, we need one parent volunteer as a chaperone. We need two deep leadership, however, so for each day we need four parents. But, more than that, we need ONE parent to be the Day Camp Coordinator.

What IS a Day Camp Coordinator? I'm glad you asked.  This is someone to ensure that we have the list of registered scouts, that they've submitted their registration online, that we have a copy of their health form and that their parent(s) register at least one day as a chaperone and that THEY have attended live YPT training. It's just someone to work behind the scenes as a point-of-contact for this activity and check boxes beside names. It's a very simple but very important job. You do NOT need to be a registered leader to do this... just someone who is willing to lend a helping hand.

We know there is someone out there waiting to help fill a void -- and THIS IS YOUR TIME TO SHINE! We need you!

And, if you're just feeling exceptionally generous, we have another couple of volunteer roles that we would love to be filled before the upcoming year. Please come to the Annual Planning Committee Meeting is Monday, May 1. If you'd like to plug in, please PLEASE do everything possible to make it to this meeting. THIS MEETING is where the magic happens and we need YOU to be a part of it!

Uncle Sam Says - Pack 1910 Needs you to volunteer!

Our Cub Scouts want to go to Day Camp. We need two-deep leadership in two different dens every single day of Mustang District Day Camp.  That means, we need FOUR parent volunteers as chaperones EVERY DAY and we need ONE parent to be the Day Camp Coordinator.


What IS a Day Camp Coordinator? Someone to ensure that we have a complete list of scouts, that they've submitted their forms, that we have a copy of their health form and that their parents register at least one day as a chaperone and have attended training. It's basically someone to work behind the scenes as a point-of-contact for this activity and check boxes beside names.  It's a simple but very important job. You do NOT need to be a registered leader to do this... just someone who is willing to lend a helping hand.  

We know there is someone out there waiting to help fill a void -- and THIS IS YOUR TIME TO SHINE! We need you!

And, if you're just feeling exceptionally generous, we have another couple of volunteer roles that we would love to be filled before the upcoming year. Specifically the positions of PACK SECRETARY, OUTINGS CHAIR, and TRAINING CHAIR. 

Our next Committee Meeting is Monday, March 6. It's two months before our Annual Planning Meeting where we plan the entire upcoming Scouting year. So, now is a GREAT time to jump in and get your feet wet before the kick off of our Summer Events!  If you'd like to plug in, please PLEASE do everything possible to make it to this meeting. THIS is where the magic happens and we need you to be a part of it!

Day Camp 2016 -- It's A Wrap!

Pack 1910 Scouts had a fun time of Scouting and adventure at the Mustang District Cub Scout Day Camp this year! Harvest Church hosted us once again this year from June 6-10. This year's theme was C.S.I. - Cub Scout Investigators.  

 

 

 


Our scouts were able to take part in crafts, games, songs, skits, archery and BB gun ranges, and a whole host of other activities. Each day camper received a commemorative t-shirt and hat, completed several requirements towards their next rank, and amassed numerous memories and new skills from a week well spent.

Big thanks go out to those Pack 1910 parents who gave up their time to serve as both chaperones and our pack representatives at Day Camp this year:

Day Camp Registration is LIVE **IMPORTANT NEWS**

You read that right -- Mustang District Cub Scout Day Camp registration is NOW LIVE!

Are you ready to sign your Scout up for a week of AWESOMENESS?  Look no further than RIGHT HERE.

The dates for camp are June 6-10 and the theme is CSI: Cub Scout Investigators!  The camp takes place at Harvest Church located at 7200 Denton Highway, Watauga.  


Cub Scout Day Camp is the place for outdoor adventure and Cub Scout FUN! It’s a week of activities and programs for Cub Scouts of all ranks not regularly found in den or pack activities.  These include BB gun safety & shooting, archery, hiking, water activities, and outdoor skills, as well as crafts, games, and advancement. 

In order to be guaranteed a t-shirt, your scouter MUST BE REGISTERED BY MAY 16.  

Online Registration CLOSES May 30.  

Camp is $95 per scout. Please note that camperships ARE available to cover half the cost for those in need.  You will need to complete this form and submit it to the Committee Chair or Cubmaster as soon as registration opens.  

Cub Scout Day Camp is completely volunteer run which means we are counting on our parents to register as a volunteer at least one day (preferrably two) during the week.  

We require a total of FOUR PARENTS PER DAY for our Pack; two parents to chaperone the Cub Scout den and two parents to chaperone the Webelos den.  In order to chaperone, you MUST TAKE THE LIVE, IN-PERSON YOUTH PROTECTION TRAINING CLASS.  These will be offered throughout the month and will be posted on Scoutbook.  Once you take it, please send April Driggers a copy of your card via e-mail.

ONCE YOUR REGISTER, YOU NEED TO CONTACT ELIZABETH HAYDEN IMMEDIATELY.  She is Pack 1910's Day Camp Coordinator. She will be collecting the health forms for all volunteer chaperones, scouts, siblings and tots.  You have to have a completed, current health-form on file to attend camp.  Let her know, too, which day(s) you are available to chaperone. We can NOT do this without you!

***If your son sold camp cards to offset his registration fees and you want to use that toward your Day Camp registration, please let Elizabeth know and we will issue you a reimbursement check for the portion of sales.  You will still need to pay for daycamp in full since the transactions are through two separate entities.

Ready... Aim... Fire! Shooting Sports Awards

We briefly addressed another award opportunity for the Cub Scouts at the March Pack meeting -- the newly revised Shooting Sports Awards 

Take aim at fun and excitement in your council with the new Cub Scout Shooting Sports Awards. The awards will be offered in three disciplines: BB guns, archery, and a new one -- oh yes... wait for it...

You heard me... SLING SHOTS!!!

With rank-specific requirements and insignia, there is incentive for boys to earn the awards year after year at camp. Scouts consistently list shooting sports as one of their most-desired outdoor activities and with these new awards, Cub Scouts will hit the bull’s-eye with fun!

Something to note is that Cub Scout shooting sports programs may ONLY be conducted on a district or council level which means Longhorn Council managed family camping events (like the Fall Festival every October), Cub Scout or Webelos resident camp (held each July) or at DAY CAMP!  What another GREAT reason to go to DAY CAMP!

Cub Scouts earn the shooting sports awards in the following order:

1. Earn the patch for whatever rank your son is (Tiger, Wolf, Bear, Webelos) for BB gun, archery or sling shot.
2. Earn the pin. Complete the Level 2 requirements for the same discipline (BB gun, archery or sling shot) in which the patch was earned. 

The beauty of this program, too, is that they can earn different patches and pins for each of the disciplines they pursue!  How awesome is that?  Each year they can earn the patch and then the pin (if they choose) for each of the three events.

The reason that these awards are not part of the rank specific adventure loops is not only because of the requirement for there to be trained supervision for each of the three disciplines (bb gun, archery or sling shots) and the fact that they can only take place at authorized events, but also to comply with local laws.  Therefore, the decision was made to make it a “standalone” award, and as such, not part of the adventure program.

WHO: Cubs entering 1st grade in the fall - 5th graders
WHAT:  Attend the BEST District Day Camp in our Council!
WHERE:  Harvest Church on 377 in Watauga
WHEN:  June 6-10 from 8:30 am - 4 pm daily
WHY:  Because it's a BLAST
HOW MUCH:  $95.00 per scout

We are letting the boys sell camp cards to offset this fee.  From every camp card they sell, $2.50 goes toward their day camp fee!
