April's Core Value

The Core Value for the month of April is FAITH.

Having faith is having a complete trust in someone as well as having a strong belief in God or in the doctrines of a religion.

Hebrews 11:1 states that "So then faith is being confident of things hoped for and certain of things that we cannot see."  So, simply stated, you believe in your heart what is right and true even without having to see to believe.

New Cub Scout Program

We've mentioned it in the Committee meetings and have touched on it at the Pack Meetings but a whole new program overhaul has been done to the Scouting program.

CSI - Cub Scout Investigations - March Pack Meeting

The March Pack Meeting theme couldn't have been any cooler!

CSI and after a precursory search of the internet -- I feel really sad we didn't purchase some of these just for fun!  Who doesn't need another ball cap?  I collect these like some women collect shoes!  I mean, who WOULDN'T want to have their very own CSI ballcap!??!?!?

Thank you to those who came and made this meeting so much fun!  I know that it's the time of year for sports and all kinds of conflicts but thank you for keeping Scouts active and a priority.  The boys truly stay engaged... if they're there.  So, thank you all for giving them the opportunity to stay engaged and have fun!

We started out the Pack meeting with a brief announcement period.... and YES!  I realize they are quite

It's an evil necessity but we have much coming up and I want everyone to have as much information as you can!

1) Brahama's game - $5 per person DEADLINE - SATURDAY MARCH 21 person PayPay is available to just get that one wiped off your plate.


2) Camp Card - given out in groups of 20. Simply sign out.  Sell.  Return what you do and don't sell along with the money.  Deadline is May 4 (at the Committee Meeting) for all unused cards and funds.

3) Pinewood Derby is going to be April 11.  If you need a car, see April!  THIS is going to be FUN!  An event the boys (ad their dads) look forward to all year long!


4)  April's Pack Meeting will be BACK at the FLC and the theme is LEGOS!  

5) Don't forget the opportunities to see the Texas Rangers through Scouting!  Click here for that information.  Register on your own.

6) Our bridging ceremony will take place at the H-Center on May 31.  This is where the boys cross the bridge to their new rank which they can begin working on the first day of summer.  They will also be presented with their new books.  Parents need to purchase a new neckerchief and anew slide.


7) District Day Camp is also a great time.  June 8-12, $92 per scout, 8:30-4pm at Harvest Church.  There is a need for parent chaperones in order to maintain two-deep leadership.  

So, yeah, announcements... a great way to immediately suck the life out of the party, but sometimes you just have to get all of the information out there as soon as you can so that you can get on to the FUN STUFF!

Like.... a one-hand-behind-your-back-be-the-fastest-of-the-fast to pull and entire box of Kleenex one by one until they're all gone.  It's tricky!!!  Garret B. won first place in this contest.  We are going to use the empty boxes for a fun game next month!

From here the boys were each given their...

mission folders which contained a mustache for each one.  Hey, a kid's gotta have a disguise! They also read over a list of four strategic and very involved missions they were to embark upon -- should they choose to accept this mission.  Guess what... they all accepted.

I followed with the Bears.  Our first stop was fingerprinting. They were shown how to make prints, how to lift prints, how to leave prints and how to read prints.  We learned the key features people look for.  It was pretty cool!


From there we went to the Mission Impossible Course.  For this an entire hall way was set up to resemble a laser grid.  They had to go under, over and through an entire hallway's worth of lasers -- and then BACK AGAIN!  We had one Scout trying to limbo!  It was awesome!


Next we went to target practice!  Yep, you heard me!  Full on NERF gun FUN!  Every spy needs to be stealthy and accurate.  Targets were near, far, high, low... you needed to be speedy, accurate and watch out for the ricochet.  They did great.

We followed this up by learning about secret codes.  They made their own cipher wheel and wrote their own code and then had to decipher a code given to them.  Completing this task was rewarding - literally!  It was then they earned their monthly awards!  Thanks to Nancy Zey for packaging those up!

It was a great evening!  Thanks to those that came.  They sure had a lot of fun!  It's all for the boys!

Remember, while dens meet every couple of weeks, our Pack only meets once a month. The Pack Meeting is the regular gathering of all of our dens.  It's an important place for our families to learn the how's and why's and what's of Scouting so that as our older dens attrition out, our younger dens' parents can pick up the reins.  Besides, only at the Pack Meetings do you get to collect all your HARDWARE, show off those uniforms proudly and talk about all they've been working on to everyone!  Speaking of hard work -- we had a new scout there last night who has already completed his Bobcat!  Be ready for a fun ceremony next month for him!

Pack 1910 Night with the Brahmas

Personally, I can't think of a better way to spend a Friday night than at a hockey game with my family and friends making memories and watching the kids go nuts.. oh, yeah, an catching some amazing, fast-action, hockey too!

Pack 1910 has scheduled a Pack Night with the Lone Star Brahmas for Friday, March 27.

Deadline for tickets is Saturday, March 21.

I have created a PayPal button to facilitate payment for those wanting to attend. It's a real fun time!  You may check your scout's requirements, too... sometimes they are required to go see an actual live sport as one of their requirements and/or electives!  Cool way to knock that out!

Wild West Spring Campout

YOU know the reason boys want to join Scouts.  

WE know the reason boys want to join Scouts.  

THEY WANT TO CAMP!!!!  

We also know that everyone is busy so rather than encumber our families with planning a full campout, this year we are going to Camp Tahuaya to participate in the Longhorn Council's Wild West Family Adventures Camp!  



So, without further adieu -- here is the information on Pack 1910's spring campout!  

• WHO:  All members of Pack 1910 and their families
• WHAT:  Pack 1910 Spring Campout
• WHERE:  BSA Camp Tahuaya.  Camp Tahuaya is a 147 acre camp with the largest spring in Texas.  It's 1 mile west of the Tahuaya Road Exit at mm 289a on I-35 just south of Belton and Temple.  It's 47 miles south of Waco.   Address for GPS users:  2603 Tahuaya Dr., Belton, TX 76513  You can find a printable map of the property here.
• WHEN:  Saturday, April 18 - Sunday, April 19 (you do have the option of camping Friday night if you wish -- please indicate this on your registration form)
• COST:  (early bird registration costs) $29 per person aged 6+, 15 for those 4-5 and under 4 are free
• WHAT'S INCLUDED?:  Saturday lunch, Saturday dinner, Sunday breakfast, a camp t-shirt and a patch for each camper
• WHAT WILL WE DO?:  petting zoo, climbing wall, BB shooting, archery, scavenger hunts, western history & characters, nature walks, western films, western storytelling, reptile show, leather crafts, bounce houses, tractor rides, Sunday chapel service, new sports games, and a campfire program.... but more importantly... it get our Scouts OUT!  We are committed to keeping the OUT in SCOUTING!

We will have ONE point of contact for registration purposes.  Please print off your registration form and return it, with payment, to April Driggers NO LATER THAN TUESDAY, APRIL 14.  Registrations will be submitted to Council the following morning (right before the early bird deadline expires!)  Make your checks payable to Longhorn Council.

Take Me Out to the Ballgame

Attention all you Rangers fans out there!  The Texas Rangers have announced their Scout Weekend for 2015 at Globe Life Park in Arlington!

There are not one, not two, but THREE games to choose from!  You'll get to watch the Texas Rangers take on the Cleveland Indians!  Something cool is in store for each night so pick and choose wisely!

Friday, May 15:  Following the game, stay for a post-game fireworks show.

Saturday, May 16: This is camo cap night for those 14 and older AND they will be hosting their first ever camp out on our youth ballpark field. They'll have popcorn, a movie, and dough-nuts in the morning. Please note that you do not have to do the sleepover if you would just like to attend the game. Campers will be limited to the first 150 to sign up.  

Sunday, May 17: YUUU... t-shirt night!  Attendees in their Scout uniform will be able to take part in a pre-game parade around globe life park before the game.

Everyone who attends will receive a commemorative scout patch for their brag vest.   A photo of the patch is available on the registration form.  Pricing varies depending on where you want to sit.  The flyer is available for download HERE. 

Those interested in attending are encouraged to get your ticket registration forms in SOONER rather than later (especially for Saturday).  Dens that would like to participate together need to submit their orders TOGETHER to ensure that the seats are all in the same area otherwise the orders will be processed on a first come, first served basis. This will need to be organized at the den level.

Friends of Scouting

Thank you to all of our Pack families who contributed to the Friends of Scouting (FOS) campaign at our Blue & Gold Banquet.  Through your generous donations, our Pack raised $1,945 for the FOS campaign!!!  That's amazing and thank you ALL for being a friend to Scouting!

March Core Value

The Core Value for the month of March is COMPASSION.

Compassion literally means “to suffer together.” Among emotion researchers, it is defined as the feeling that arises when you are confronted with another’s suffering and feel motivated to relieve that suffering.

But how exactly can we teach and demonstrate compassion in a "me" generation? This article has some great ideas on how to effectively do that. 

• Live by example.  Be the change you want to see in the world.  If you want your children to be selfless, caring individuals, show them what it means to do that very thing.
• Volunteer.  There are many opportunities in our very own community for your children to work along side you.  Don't be so busy that you teach them that investing your time is a gift of service that you take seriously.

I love the idea of being the living example.  Maya Angelou said "be the change you want to see in the world" and I think that living a life filled with compassion is a great place to start!

Pinewood Derby is around the corner

If you haven't had the chance to pick up your Official Pinewood Derby kit, please see Mr. Rodie to do so or be extra sure to pick it up at the next pack meeting!  Our Pinewood Derby is set for April 11.  Registration and vehicle check in will be Friday, April 10 from 6-9 pm at the church.  We will be setting up the track so you can try your car out, make any last minute repairs and check that baby in!  The official scale will be there and we will be checking car dimensions to be sure everything is in compliance for the big race!!

The race will be at 9:30 am the following morning.

A favorite blog of mine actually summed it up quite nicely

All the speed in your son’s car will come from POTENTIAL ENERGY being converted to KINETIC ENERGY. When the car is at the top of the track, ready to go down, it is full of potential energy, or the force of gravity pulling the car back to earth. If the track were to suddenly disappear, the car would fall to the ground, converting the potential energy to movement, or kinetic energy.

Theoretically, the fastest the car can go is the speed at which it would be traveling as it fell right before it hit the ground. Of course, your car (or your son’s car) won’t be going that fast since it loses some of it’s kinetic energy to FRICTION and other forces. Friction losses come from the rubbing of the wheels against the side of the car, against the axles, and against the track. There is also a little bit of friction from air, called drag. Energy is also converted into rotational energy, i.e. the spinning of the wheels.
So in essence, we want to maximize the potential energy in your car and minimize the losses due to friction and other forces. While I can’t give away all our secrets, here are a couple of tips to do just that.

Dremel actually has an interactive tool online where your son can pick out the design and it will give you a printable template for which to build his car!  How cool is THAT?  There are all kinds of stickers and decals available at hobby shops.

There is so much good information and ideas out there!  Just let your fingers do the walking!  You'll be overwhelmed in no time!

Fall Campout! Save the Date!

OUR 2015 FALL CAMPOUT IS GOING TO BE A WILD ONE!!!  September 19-20 Pack 1910 is going to FOSSIL RIM WILDLIFE CENTER in Glen Rose!  It's going to be an AWESOME experience for everyone!

Overnight camp at Fossil Rim Wildlife Center in Glen Rose will include:

• Three educational programs
• Lunch, Dinner and Breakfast 
• Air conditioned/heated facilities (bunk beds)
• Shower facilities near the bunkhouse
• A guided hike (weather permitting)
• A guided safari ride through the park

The cost will be $93.50 per person

****obviously with the BSA Cub Scout program change happening in June, we will do our best to incorporate the educational programs we select for our overnighter into the advancement requirements for each rank as well as the World Conservation Award

***The Camp Card fundraiser will be a way for the boys to offset their camp fee.

Scout Sunday

A Scout is Reverent.

Scout Sunday is already one of the highlights of the BSA year. But Scout Sunday 2015 promises to be even more special. That’s because this year’s Scout Sunday falls on February 8, the BSA’s birthday. (The Boy Scouts of America was founded on Feb. 8, 1910.) The last time Scout Sunday fell on Feb. 8 was in 2009. It won’t happen again until 2026.

So there’s extra incentive to make this year’s celebration even more meaningful. On Scout Sunday, uniformed Scouts and Scouters across the country will greet the congregation, participate in worship services, receive religious awards and conduct service projects to benefit their place of worship.

The goal: Thank the religious institution for their service as the unit’s chartered organization.

Some religious institutions and the Scout units they serve have a Scout Sunday plan that’s been in place for years. If so, great.

Our Chartered Organization, First United Methodist Church of Keller, welcome our scouts to wear their full Field Uniform and come participate in their services.  If you are not familiar with your church's Scout Sunday protocol, this would be a great time to reach out to the church leadership and find out how  you can help promote scouting within your own church home.  

Scouts that wear their uniforms to church on Scout Sunday will earn this beautiful patch for their brag vest.  Please be sure to notify your den leader as such.

February's Pack Meeting

Don't forget we have an AMAZING pack meeting scheduled for Tuesday.  And, frankly, I hope EVERYONE will make plans to join us at 6:30 p.m. on February 10 at the Family Life Center at the First United Methodist Church of Keller for some rootin' tootin' fun as we challenge each other with our monthly pack meeting like NONE OTHER before it.... We will have an annual CHALLENGE of MINUTE TO WIN IT CONTESTS!!!!!

We are going to have games that are going to drive you mad, make you laugh, and leave you so glad you came!  Don't miss this one!  It's worth it!

Dress code for this is ACTIVITY UNIFORMS (Pack t-shirt and uniform bottoms) however, uniforms WILL need to be worn by the TIGER DEN ONLY long enough to do the Flag Ceremony and then they are welcome to put on their Pack T-shirt if they own one.  If they'd like to buy one, please see a leader, Chris Warren or April Driggers.  Payments can be made via credit card, cash or check.  Whatever works.  

If your sons have been working on anything and have something they need to show off, the den display tables will be set up for them to proudly display their work.

If you still owe for POPCORN or DUES REGISTRATION please PLEASE make arrangements to pay for it at that time.  Thank you for your understanding.

The next event for us will be the annual Blue & Gold Banquet on Friday, February 20.  We hope you're getting ready for that!

February's Core Value of the Month is Resourcefulness

The Core Value for the month of February is Resourcefulness.  This character trait is definitely worthy of a second glance. In fact, just to BE called resourceful is a truly one of the highest compliments someone can give an aspiring Cub Scout!  Why?  Because although you may have a great idea.... YOU are the person who finds a way to execute this idea!  

Resourcefulness: Using human resources and other resources to their fullest. Cub Scouts will gain the knowledge and the means to meet situations effectively whether they are working on a service project or completing a den activity.

BALOO

Parents, we are in need of more BALOO trained adults in our Pack.  

Why?  Great question! I'm glad you asked.  You see, as a Pack we not allowed to camp-out anywhere other than at a Council or District sponsored event UNLESS we have at LEAST one BALOO trained adult.  We currently only have two BALOO trained adults in our ENTIRE PACK!  Also, they are BOTH in our Webelos I den!  

Furthermore, as a Pack, we like to have a minimum of two BALOO trained adults on every Pack camp out because if there is only one.... and that person has to leave... the campout has to be over.  It's not allowed to continue per BSA rule.  The more BALOO trained adults we have in our Pack, the better off everyone is!

But have no fear.... THIS WEEKEND there is an upcoming training provided by no other than our illustrious Mustang District Training Committee.  The catch?  We need parents to attend!

WHY:  Because our camping program DEPENDS ON YOU!

This is one way and one afternoon that you can do something small that will make a big difference to the boys' program.  After all, we do it ALL for them!  Please consider attending the training.

Blue & Gold 2015

Pack 1910's Blue and Gold Banquet will be held Friday, February 20 at 6pm in the Family Life Center of the First United Methodist Church of Keller.  The Blue and Gold is our annual traditional family dinner celebrating the birthday of scouting.  At this time our Pack also recognizes our leaders and says goodbye to our Webelos II as this will be their last official function as a Cub Scout.  We also hold a themed "dad and lad" cake decorating contest.

We will have an evening of fellowship, dinner, dessert, an exciting Arrow of Light presentation and did I mention the snakes?  OH yes.... SNAKES!

Dinner will be a slithering pasta bar with salad and bread

• Baked ziti
• Spaghetti with marinara and meat sauce
• Fettuccine noodles with butter and alfredo sauce on the side

You won't want to miss it!  So please sssssssave the date on your calendar and ssssssstart brainstorming for your ssssssscout's cake!

It's going to be a ssssssssssssssssssssssssssssssuper event!

January Core Value

The Core Value for the month of January is POSITIVE ATTITUDE.

Having a positive attitude is being cheerful and setting our minds to look for and find the best in all situations. Through participating in various activities at the pack meeting and pack talent show, boys will gain a better understanding of the importance of having a positive attitude whether they are part of the audience or as the center of attention on stage. 

But how exactly do they have a positive attitude? By learning to:

• Be positive in their thoughts and words. 
• Be cheerful. 
• Look for the bright side of all situations.
• Keep a good sense of humor.
• Be optimistic.
• Think good thoughts.
• Believe in yourself.
• Trust your friends, family, and teammates.

There are lots of opportunities in Cub Scouts where boys can let those negative feelings and emotions creep up... at den meetings... during games... having to wait... being on a team that doesn't win... but helping, redirecting and showing them how to have a positive attitude helps EVERYONE around them!  Remind them to always
