Cubanapolis 500

January's Pack meeting is one you won't want to miss -- our annual Cubanapolis!

Just what is an Cubanapolis?  I'm glad you asked!  A Cubanapolis is a fun family event where the boys, prior to race day (and with their parent’s assistance) make a cardboard race car that they can wear and run with. Boxes were passed out at the December Christmas party. If you weren't able to make it, please get with your den leader ASAP to get your box!

The emphasis on this event is family fun and participation!

We will, however, have some type of recognition for various categories for the construction and design of the cars -- so be creative!

Please make arrangements to pick up your cardboard box from your den leader if you did not get it at the December Pack meeting. YOU NEED THIS in order to make your car!

Car Making Rules:

  • Body of car must be constructed of cardboard. Tape, tinfoil, paint, construction paper, stickers and paper plates can also be used for decoration.
  • Use the box provided by the Pack.  It should fit around your son without being either too snug or too loose.
  • No metal or glass materials may be used.
  • No items can be hanging or dragging behind a car
  • For safety reasons, cars should not have a ‘windshield’

Race Procedures:
  • Each race will consist of 4 laps
  • Each racer will need an adult present to be their pit crew

Each racer should bring 4 things with them on race day
  1. Goggles or glasses or a swimming mask
  2. A small towel or washcloth
  3. A helmet (bike or ski helmet)
  4. Gym-appropriate LACE up tennis shoes WITH socks.
Reminders will be sent out closer to race day. A couple of extras will be available, but certainly not enough for everyone. We will cover more of what the race entails the night of the race.

For our annual Cubanopolis to be a success, we want to remind our scouts that what is important is that they do their best, play by the rules, show good sportsmanship, and have fun.

Preparation
The Cub will decorate the box to look like a race car (or a space ship, garbage truck, or any vehicle he wants. Construction paper, paint, tape, aluminum foil and markers are all great things to have on hand to spur creativity. Colored paper plates make great wheels. Be sure no dangerous materials (such as glass or metal) are used.

And as always, remind the boys that what is important is that they do their best, play by the rules, show good sportsmanship, and have fun.

There are all KINDS of samples all over the internet, but I've included a couple I found as well just for inspiration.  I can't wait to see the creative minds at work in our Pack!

Pack Meeting TOMORROW

Don't forget TOMORROW, at 6:30 Tuesday, November 10 is the November Pack meeting at the Bear Creek Park fire pit.

Park in the parking lot by the sand volleyball court and go over the bridge to the opposite side of the creek.  The fire pit is near the running trail.  Assistant Cubmaster, Christopher Mahanna will be our fireman for the evening.

A word of safety before our event -- please do not allow any children to run near the fire.  Along the same lines, our fireman will be the only on responsible for putting **anything** in or removing anything from the fire until the flag retirement ceremony.  Parents, we would like you present beside them as they place their flag parts into the pit (safety first).

We have a 50% chance of rain.  Which means, we also have a 50% change of NO rain. Please watch your e-mail.  If we have to reschedule due to rain, you will be notified both on the blog and through your e-mail.  Announcements regarding postponement will be made no later than 5pm.  The temperature looks good, however.  The low is only 66. That certainly beats the 30 degree temps and teen-level wind chill that we've had for the last two years!!  We are certainly hoping the odds are in our favor!

This isn't just an average campfire, this will be a flag retirement ceremony which we will attempt to make sure that ALL scouts get a part to play.  Webelos I and II need to be sure you let your den leaders know ASAP if you'll be present so they can reserve speaking lines for you.

WHAT TO BRING:  Scouts should be sure to bring a HEADLAMP if you have one (to keep your hands free for reading), water bottles,
a chair and maybe a blanket... you may need it!

Our event will commence at 6:30 sharp.  Once the service has ended, we invite pack members and their families over for some hot chocolate and a light snack.  Thank you to our Webelos I, Attel family, for coordinating this.  Please see Monica Attel during set-up to offer assistance.

If you have yet to pick up your popcorn, it will be in April's car.  I am working on fixing errors on two orders.  I will have everything else there.

First Pack Meeting - TONIGHT!!

We've been waiting since the end of May and through all summer just for this moment -- TONIGHT IS THE FIRST PACK MEETING OF THE NEW YEAR!!!

We have new friends joining our pack.  We have new leadership in place.  We have new places to go.  We have a whole new program!  We are ready to have some fun!

First things first, when you walk in the door.  Please sign in!

Things kick off at 6:15p.m. with a gathering activity that coincides with our theme of CLEAN.  We will hold a flag ceremony promptly at 6:30 p.m.

We will learn a chant, meet our new friends, meet our leaders, be given a challenge, play a fun game, talk about fundraising, receive recognition, talk about the Outdoor Code and how our choice to be "clean" effects the world around us.

Pack meeting protocol... boys on the floor in a line with their den.  Parents sit back a little so that they can help man any stations that we have activities going on at. But remember, this is a family affair!  We want everyone helping and engaged.  It makes it so much more fun for everyone -- ESPECIALLY your son when he sees you smile!

Welcome to the Adventure!  We're so glad you're here!

End of Year Picnic and Bridging Ceremony

The culmination and celebration of a year of hard work is something Pack 1910 scouts look forward to.  Our annual bridging celebration and picnic is definitely one of our do-no-miss events!  The Scouts will have a BLAST with our water activities, and we all get to enjoy a casual meal together then watch our boys bridge to the next rank in their journey.  This will also serve as the last official Pack Meeting until September.  Another post will be made on the fun summer events we have in store!  Be sure to save the date for those!

So, be sure to check your e-mail (and/or spam folder) for the Sign-up Genius that went out today. In order to make this great event EVEN BETTER, we need a little help from everyone.  So, thank you in advance for stepping up and helping the Pack go!

More reminders will be sent before the event but, in short:
  • Sunday, May 31 at 3pm
  • First United Methodist Church Hallelujah Center
  • have your scout show up in a sun shirt and swim shorts (and shoes that can get wet) -- a towel would be a great idea too!
  • bring your scout's full uniform to change into for the bridging ceremony
  • sign up for one or more of the slots to cover needed items for the picnic
  • bring chairs
  • bring drinks for your family
  • bring your cameras
If you have any questions, please contact April or your den leaders.

CSI - Cub Scout Investigations - March Pack Meeting

The March Pack Meeting theme couldn't have been any cooler!

CSI and after a precursory search of the internet -- I feel really sad we didn't purchase some of these just for fun!  Who doesn't need another ball cap?  I collect these like some women collect shoes!  I mean, who WOULDN'T want to have their very own CSI ballcap!??!?!?

Thank you to those who came and made this meeting so much fun!  I know that it's the time of year for sports and all kinds of conflicts but thank you for keeping Scouts active and a priority.  The boys truly stay engaged... if they're there.  So, thank you all for giving them the opportunity to stay engaged and have fun!

We started out the Pack meeting with a brief announcement period.... and YES!  I realize they are quite

It's an evil necessity but we have much coming up and I want everyone to have as much information as you can!

1) Brahama's game - $5 per person DEADLINE - SATURDAY MARCH 21 person PayPay is available to just get that one wiped off your plate.

2) Camp Card - given out in groups of 20. Simply sign out.  Sell.  Return what you do and don't sell along with the money.  Deadline is May 4 (at the Committee Meeting) for all unused cards and funds.

3) Pinewood Derby is going to be April 11.  If you need a car, see April!  THIS is going to be FUN!  An event the boys (ad their dads) look forward to all year long!

4)  April's Pack Meeting will be BACK at the FLC and the theme is LEGOS!

5) Don't forget the opportunities to see the Texas Rangers through Scouting!  Click here for that information.  Register on your own.

6) Our bridging ceremony will take place at the H-Center on May 31.  This is where the boys cross the bridge to their new rank which they can begin working on the first day of summer.  They will also be presented with their new books.  Parents need to purchase a new neckerchief and anew slide.

7) District Day Camp is also a great time.  June 8-12, $92 per scout, 8:30-4pm at Harvest Church.  There is a need for parent chaperones in order to maintain two-deep leadership.

So, yeah, announcements... a great way to immediately suck the life out of the party, but sometimes you just have to get all of the information out there as soon as you can so that you can get on to the FUN STUFF!

Like.... a one-hand-behind-your-back-be-the-fastest-of-the-fast to pull and entire box of Kleenex one by one until they're all gone.  It's tricky!!!  Garret B. won first place in this contest.  We are going to use the empty boxes for a fun game next month!

From here the boys were each given their...

mission folders which contained a mustache for each one.  Hey, a kid's gotta have a disguise! They also read over a list of four strategic and very involved missions they were to embark upon -- should they choose to accept this mission.  Guess what... they all accepted.

I followed with the Bears.  Our first stop was fingerprinting. They were shown how to make prints, how to lift prints, how to leave prints and how to read prints.  We learned the key features people look for.  It was pretty cool!

From there we went to the Mission Impossible Course.  For this an entire hall way was set up to resemble a laser grid.  They had to go under, over and through an entire hallway's worth of lasers -- and then BACK AGAIN!  We had one Scout trying to limbo!  It was awesome!

Next we went to target practice!  Yep, you heard me!  Full on NERF gun FUN!  Every spy needs to be stealthy and accurate.  Targets were near, far, high, low... you needed to be speedy, accurate and watch out for the ricochet.  They did great.

We followed this up by learning about secret codes.  They made their own cipher wheel and wrote their own code and then had to decipher a code given to them.  Completing this task was rewarding - literally!  It was then they earned their monthly awards!  Thanks to Nancy Zey for packaging those up!

It was a great evening!  Thanks to those that came.  They sure had a lot of fun!  It's all for the boys!

Remember, while dens meet every couple of weeks, our Pack only meets once a month. The Pack Meeting is the regular gathering of all of our dens.  It's an important place for our families to learn the how's and why's and what's of Scouting so that as our older dens attrition out, our younger dens' parents can pick up the reins.  Besides, only at the Pack Meetings do you get to collect all your HARDWARE, show off those uniforms proudly and talk about all they've been working on to everyone!  Speaking of hard work -- we had a new scout there last night who has already completed his Bobcat!  Be ready for a fun ceremony next month for him!
