Fall Campout

It's time again to get in gear for our Fall Family Camp out!  Our Pack tradition is to attend the Fall Festival at Sid Richardson Scout Ranch located on Lake Bridgeport.  It's a weekend campout that's packed full of fun!  No experience is necessary! This is where you go learn the ropes!

The registration form and informational brochure can be found HERE (two pages, one needs to be filled out and turned in with payment).  Please note, however, that you will turn the forms into APRIL DRIGGERS.  DO NOT mail them or turn them into the Council office. We will register as a Pack to ensure that everyone is placed at the SAME CAMPSITE.  Which, is kind of important if you want to camp with your buddies.  

Registration fees are $22 per youth, $10 per adult.  Payments can be made via check payable to LONGHORN COUNCIL.  Deadline for turning in forms to April is MONDAY, OCTOBER 12 at 8pm.  If they are not at April's by 8pm, you will need to be responsible for registering your family and the youth price increases to $27. Late registrations will need to be taken down to the Council office and turned in with payment.

There is a place on the form where you indicate if you are camping Friday night, Saturday night or if you're just attending for the day's events. Please mark this.  Once we have an idea of attendees, we will decide as a Pack what we will do for meals Saturday morning and Saturday afternoon.  Friday night dinner will be on your own. Dinner on Saturday evening and a continental breakfast Sunday is included with your registration fee, lunch is not.

This is a great opportunity, especially for our newer scouts to get their hands dirty and to spend some time on the ranges shooting archery and bb guns.  They will have an area set up for pumpkin carving and there may be a trebuchet (big catapult) set up to do some punkin' chunkin' as well!  We will go over this more as it gets closer to the date.  They're not there every weekend but we can hope, right?!  Here is a picture of one of them from a previous campout.

Other activities include: crafts, games, bounce house, leather work, and much more!

We will be attending the weekend of October 16-18 at SR2 (that is short for Sid Richardson Scout Ranch, SRSR so SR2, get it?)  Our Webelos II will be camping out with Boy Scout Troop 1910 at a different area of Sid Richardson as part of their Arrow of Light requirement.  So the majority of families on this campout will be Tigers, Wolves, Bears and Webelos I.

Again, please note that camping out Friday night is completely optional but many families enjoy the extra night in the fall air.  Many, however, do come in Saturday morning after breakfast.  Whatever works for your family!  Just get them there!! Because, let's face it -- camping is a HUGE reason why boys WANT to be in Scouts!

All Pack 1910 camp outs are family friendly events so the whole family is welcome! Mark your calendars NOW to attend!

Completed BSA Health forms are required for all parties attending. If you haven't turned yours in yet, please complete Part A & B and turn those into April with your registration.

A map of Sid Richardson can be found HERE.  Please note this is a LARGE file but it helps to show the expanse of Sid and the area the Pack will be camping in relation to the entire property.  We will be camping in the NW part of the property.  A detailed map of that specific site is HERE.  I do not have our Pack's physical camp assignment yet, obviously.

Youth Protection Training

The Boy Scouts of America require that ALL registered leaders in our program be Youth Protection Trained.  As a Pack, however, we strive to have EVERY PARENT (registered as a volunteer or not) to be trained.  Why?  It's free.  It's easily accessible online.  It requires a mere 20-30 minutes of your attention.  Plus, face it, it's just a good idea in any youth program to have everyone on the same page.

To take Youth Protection training go to My.Scouting.org and create an account. You’ll receive an email notification with your account information, including a member ID/reference number.

From the My.Scouting.org portal, click Home then My Dashboard from the menu list. The My Training page displays to take Youth Protection training. Upon completion, you may print a training certificate or save it to .pdf to e-mail to Pack leadership.  Training will be automatically be updated in the BSA's system and associated with the member ID/reference number issued when you created the account.  If you are a registered BSA volunteer, you can insert your BSA membership ID number into your account profile so that they are linked.  If you don't know your BSA membership ID number, you can go back and enter it at any time.

Of all the things we do for the boys -- this one is vital to the safety and integrity of our program. Please take the time to complete YPT training today.  The online module certification is good for two years.

Soldier To Serve

We are so pleased to announce that Pack 1910 has adopted CTM3 Jacob Burwell as our Soldier to Serve! 

At each Pack meeting, we will have a table set up for everyone to have the opportunity to write a note, draw a picture, leave cards, or just send encouragement to this young man serving our country. We will collect and send these letters monthly. 

Den leaders will be provided his mailing address so that, as a den, you can send care packages as part of a den service project. 

Feel free to write your cards/letters at home and bring them to the Pack meeting to deposit in the box. I can’t wait to spoil our soldier!

Pack T-shirts

We have definitely had enough expressed interest to generate another order for Pack 1910 t-shirts (these are also can be worn as the "Activity Uniform".  Let's face it, after spending money on a uniform shirt, you want to keep it clean and unmarred!  The best way to do that and is with an activity shirt!

Our Pack t-shirts are blue and printed front/back.  The front left breast area has the Cub Scout logo, our Pack number and Keller, TX.  

The back is the design voted on by the boys.  The boys are quite proud of this.  They love it and have some ownership since they are the ones that chose it during a pack-wide vote.

If you are interested in obtaining a pack t-shirt or two, please complete THIS order form and return it to April Driggers or your den leader.  The deadline for orders is the October Pack meeting.

Who is Ethan?

This year Cub Scouts will get to know a new member of the Cub Scout team—Ethan! 

Ethan is a Cub Scout who will guide Scouts through each rank in the new Cub Scout program. He’ll appear in each adventure in their new handbooks, and he will always be a year older and one rank ahead of the Scouts. 

As Cub Scouts learn a new skill, they’ll look to Ethan for encouragement, helpful tips, funny stories, and even some mistakes he’s made (and learned from) along the way. Ethan might not be perfect, but he does his best and has a great time with his Scouting friends. 

Boys can aspire to the increasingly exciting adventures Ethan is going on with his den—as a Wolf in the Tiger handbook, as a Bear in the Wolf handbook, and as a Webelos Scout in the Bear handbook. And as they work toward their Webelos and Arrow of Light ranks, they will catch glimpses of the fun awaiting them as they transition to Boy Scouts. 

Tiger Cub Adventure Day

Tiger Cub Adventure Day 2015

Cub Scout Adventures for Tiger Cubs and their Parents will be held October 3, 2015 at the Villages of Bear Creek Park, 1951 Bear Creek Pkwy. at Ash Ln., Euless, Texas 76039 (Mid-Cities West and Highway 360)

Come join us for a day of outdoor adventure with other new Tiger Cubs and their parent partners. This is a wonderful activity for Tiger Dens or just a Tiger and parent. There will be BBs, Archery, Climbing, games, crafts, and opportunities to earn requirements, so come join the fun and ROAR with the rest of the Tiger Cubs.


The adventure begins at 1:00 pm and continues until 5:00 pm. Bring an afternoon snack, a water bottle, and comfortable shoes!!

Early Registration Fee: $13, if paid by Wed. Sept. 30
Full Registration Fee: $18, if paid after Wed. Sept. 30
**please note this fee is only for Scouts... parents are not charged

Fee includes all activity supplies, patches, and insurance. This is a rain or shine event! In the case of inclement weather, some activities may be modified or adapted for safety and/or practicality.

Fourth Grade Has Its Perks!

For more than a century the BSA has used the great outdoors as a classroom to teach character development, citizenship training, and personal fitness. And now families with Scouts in the fourth grade have a great opportunity to explore federally managed lands and waters for free.

Yes, you read that right. On September 1, the White House launched the “Every Kid in a Park” program to encourage fourth graders to explore public lands and inspire the next generation to be active in the outdoors, spend time with friends and family, and learn in outdoor classrooms across the nation.

“Every Kid in a Park is a chance for fourth graders from every background to be outside and get to know the lands and waters that belong to them, whether it’s a national forest, a wildlife refuge, a marine sanctuary or a historic site in the center of a city,” said Christy Goldfuss, Managing Director at the White House Council on Environmental Quality. “By expanding their horizons and learning all the ways the outdoors can enrich their lives, this innovative program hopes to create greater awareness of the many benefits of our nation’s public lands and waters.”

Kids to parks passFourth grade Scouts can head to the Every Kid in a Park website to snag a pass which grants them free access to all federally managed lands and waters, including national parks, forests, wildlife refuges and marine sanctuaries. What’s more, the pass provides free access for three accompanying adults (or an entire car for drive-in parks). The pass is good for the 2015-2016 school year, too, so Scouts and their families have plenty of time to take advantage of this sweet deal!

The Every Kid in a Park program is an administration-wide effort administered in partnership with the Department of the Interior, the Department of Agriculture, the Department of Education, U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

Catholic Cub Scout Retreat

In an effort to continue our Duty to God, St. John the Apostle Church is hosting a Catholic Cub Scout Retreat on Saturday, September 26, 2015 from 9:30 am - 5pm. The address is 7341 Glenview Drive, Richland Hills, Texas.

The cost is $15 and includes a patch, lunch and supplies.

The Cub Scout Retreat is a fun and informative way for the Scouts to enjoy the outdoors with other cub scouts and grow in their faith.  The day is filled with sessions on baptism, games, songs, storytelling, hands-on craft relating to our theme, and followed by mass at 5pm.

First Pack Meeting - TONIGHT!!

We've been waiting since the end of May and through all summer just for this moment -- TONIGHT IS THE FIRST PACK MEETING OF THE NEW YEAR!!!

We have new friends joining our pack.  We have new leadership in place.  We have new places to go.  We have a whole new program!  We are ready to have some fun!

First things first, when you walk in the door.  Please sign in!  

Things kick off at 6:15p.m. with a gathering activity that coincides with our theme of CLEAN.  We will hold a flag ceremony promptly at 6:30 p.m.

We will learn a chant, meet our new friends, meet our leaders, be given a challenge, play a fun game, talk about fundraising, receive recognition, talk about the Outdoor Code and how our choice to be "clean" effects the world around us.  

Pack meeting protocol... boys on the floor in a line with their den.  Parents sit back a little so that they can help man any stations that we have activities going on at. But remember, this is a family affair!  We want everyone helping and engaged.  It makes it so much more fun for everyone -- ESPECIALLY your son when he sees you smile!

Cyber Chip

Long gone are the days of the "be home before the sun goes down" kind of parenting that a lot of us grew up with.  Unfortunately however, the more kids are inside, the more inclined they are to engage in some kind of online, electronic activity.  Being the parents of boys of Cub Scout age (1st - 5th graders), we have seen news reports about cyber bullying, online security, location services on devices, geotagging of photos and social networking predators.  It would be nice to think these topics won't impact our youth, but we need to be proactive and realize that we are in the thick of it!



Crazy fact - did you know that over 5 MILLION Facebook users are actually kids under the age of 10 even though the age limit to even have an account is 13?


If you have a son, you've likely heard of.... Minecraft.  I know my boys absolutely LOVE watching YouTube videos that have to do with Minecraft and their other favorite video games.  However, if you think, for a second, they should watch these unsupervised, you're in for a shock.  A great deal of the content in these videos is highly inappropriate. Trust me on this one!

More and more children have iPads, iPhones, tablets, Ipods and more and more access than ever to a whole worldwide web that is not the most friendly to the eyes, heart and especially to the spirit and character of our children.

With the electronic world aimed against us, how can parents teach our children internet safety principles?  

In partnership with NetSmartz®, the Boy Scouts of America developed the Cyber Chip program. Along the same lines of how the Whittling Chip is designed to teach the boys pocketknife safety, the Cyber Chip is designed to teach them internet safety. There are BSA Cyber Chip requirements for boys in grades 1-3, grades 4-5 so your Cub Scouts are covered!  In fact, there are programs available from grades 1 - 12!  Even if your children aren’t in Cub Scouts, you can still take advantage of NetSmartz’s awesome programming.

Each Cyber Chip level covers topics such as cyber bullying, cell phone use, texting, blogging, gaming and identity theft. To earn the Cyber Chip, Cub Scouts sign an Internet Safety Pledge, watch an age-appropriate online video and share what they’ve learned with their den or den leader. Older boys complete additional activities.

The Cyber Chip expires annually. Our boys can “recharge” the chip by returning to the NetSmartz® website to learn more information.

It is definitely hard to navigate these waters, but we have a responsibility to keep our kids safe and we can only do that by first educating ourselves. By encouraging our kids to participate in programs like the Cyber Chip, we are taking steps to ensure they are equipped with the tools to keep them and their friends and siblings safe.

If you want to make sure you're on top of things, the Boys & Girls Club of America created a CyberSafe program that will give you tips, discussion cards and resources for broaching the topics of cyberbullying, mobile technology, social networks and online privacy.

Cyber safety -- it's all of our jobs!  It’s never too early to begin talking about it with your boys. Start your conversation today and help them earn this awesome temporary patch that can be worn with their uniform -- the Cyber Chip!

Keeping the OUT in ScOUTing

One of the changes with the new Cub Scout program that rolled out June 1, is the emphasis on the importance of connecting boys back with nature -- in short, they want to get them camping!  In fact, going on a cam pout is now a requirement to earn your rank badge with Wolf, Bear and Arrow of Light dens.  Plus, let's face it, BOYS WANT TO CAMP! Our pack plans two (tent) camp outs a year.  One in the fall and one in the spring.  

So, be sure you save the date for the Pack 1910's October camp-out.

WHY:  To work with your son to earn his rank, to get outside, to camp, to have fun!

RSVP DEADLINE:  Payment and registration forms due to April, Sunday, October 11.

We reserve the camping area for BOTH Friday and Saturday night, but the official camp out activities do not begin until around 1pm on Saturday.  By allowing families to come Friday night, we are able to be more flexible and have more boys and families who can participate in the camping program.  In fact, there is even a place on the registration form to indicate Friday night camping - please fill this out.  Camping Friday and Saturday night is a great way to get to know your Pack families.  Please note, the form says to turn it into the Longhorn Council -- DO NOT DO THIS!  Forms need to be turned into April so that she can register us as a pack.  Payments via check should be made out to LONGHORN COUNCIL.

Activities begin around 1 on Saturday and include items like bounce houses, leather crafts, archery, bb guns, pumpkin carving, etc.  The haunted hay ride is fun and generally NOT that scary, but you know your child and, as such, it is not a mandatory requirement and they may stay back at the campsite with you until our group returns.  

Boys' Life Magazine

One of the items available to Scouts that some Packs consider optional is the Boy's Life Magazine.  Our Pack feels so strongly about the benefit from this publication that we actually include a subscription for every single Cub Scout with their membership fees.

Their website has fun interactive pages with silly quizzes, instructional videos (want to learn to tie a knot?), gear spotlights, recipes, and so much more!  It's definitely one to bookmark and add to their "parent approved" lists for them to visit over and over again!

Awesome Sign Up Night!

PThanks to all you guys who came out to keep us all company on the annual Cub Scout Sign Up night!  

Thanks to Ed Attel for securing the rockets from the Longhorn Council to ensure that the boys new to scouting are completely aware that they ARE going to have a blast -- quite LITERALLY!  

There will be a few e-mails, lists, forms and such flying your way for the next few weeks until we tackle all of the paperwork.  However, once that gets handled, we should have smooth sailing for the year ahead! 

We have an excited and invigorated group of leaders ready to jump in and make this the best program for the boys in Pack 1910... probably the best Pack in ALL OF KELLER!  We hope to set the standard by which all Packs will judge a fantastic program!

That does require a lot of effort, and so we will be looking to YOU -- our awesome parents -- to step in and fill the gaps.  

The first sheet I wanted to provide a link to for you was the NEW CUB SCOUT CHECKLIST FOR PARENTS.  This is simply a way for you, as a parent, to track the few items that need to happen to ensure they they do.  I'm a checklist kind of girl.  I figure who can't use a checklist to make sure they're staying on course.  

In short, it makes sure you have your registration form turned in (so that we can get you added to our system).  Complete the BSA Health Form for registered adults and youth.  Be sure you're checking out our website frequently!  Meet with your den leader. Pay those registration dues.  One check and you're golden until next December!  Visit the Scout shop for your uniform components and insignia.  Volunteer for something!  Read the Scout Handbook!  Complete Youth Protection Training Online ASAP and provide April, John or Christopher with a copy of your completion card.

It's time to kick off a new year in Pack 1910 and we want YOU to join us!  Our annual Cub Scout Sign Up night will be Tuesday, September 1 at 6:30 p.m.

Scouting promotes and encourages family togetherness.  Time is a valuable commodity and what better way to spend it than investing in lasting memories with your son.  More than ever, today’s families struggle to find time to spend together. Cub Scouting helps to support your family by providing ready-made opportunities for you and your son to do things together.
Your son needs to belong to a group of boys his own age. Through this sense of belonging, he builds his self-esteem and learns to get along with others. As a parent, you want to be assured that the groups that your boy joins will teach values consistent with good citizenship, character development, physical fitness and spiritual growth. The Boy Scouts of America has been weaving these lifetime values into fun and educational activities since 1910.

He will learn to live by the code of “On my honor.”

But... we know that boys do not join Cub Scouting to get their character built.  Boys join Scouts.... because it's fun!!!

Fossil Rim Overnighter is on the Horizon

Mark your calendars and save the date Cub Scouts!  Our over-nighter at the Fossil Rim Wildlife Center in Glen Rose is on the horizon!

This is a new experience for our Pack and was added to our "special events" rotation so that our boys and their families could enjoy a varied program that provided unique opportunities of all variety.

Fossil Rim Wildlife Center is nestled amidst the live oak thickets, limestone outcroppings, and stands of juniper in the rustic hills of Somervell County.  It's a sanctuary for endangered species. Their goal is promoting the preservation and procreation of threatened/endangered species, environmental awareness, and a recreational and educational experience for people of all ages. 

We will check in Saturday morning, September 20 into climate-controlled cabins and then enjoy a full program of activities.

Lunch, dinner, a campfire program, a safari adventure and three educational experiences along with breakfast are included with your payment of $93.50 per person.  Credit cards are accepted but will incur a service charge.

One of the educational adventures we will learn about is capture techniques used by the vets at Fossil Rim.  Being a wildlife veterinarian there isn't easy, and in this program our Scouts will learn about some of the dangerous tasks the vets undertake in the field.  They will learn what it means to work with wild animals, learn about what training and precautions must be taken and hear real stories of what goes on behind the scenes at the park.  Each Scout will be able to test their "vet-ability" as they participate in a hands-on activity as well.

Another educational opportunity we will have will be a class called "Dyeing From Nature." Scouts will be taken back through time to an era when man turned to nature for his needs.  On this journey of discovery, they will have an opportunity to experiment with native natural dye -- one that is even still used today on a daily basis.  For this class, each kiddo needs to bring a pre-washed, white t-shirt! (Hand-made souvenirs!  What can be better?!)

Texas Rangers Scout Day

In the event you are really wanting to pack the weekend of September 18, 19 and 20 full of all the fun you can possibly have (since we are camping at Fossil Rim on the 19th), I wanted to be sure to extend this special invitation to all of our Pack family to attend the BSA Scout Day with the Texas Rangers.
