BALOO

YOU need to take BALOO!

What IS BALOO training? 

BALOO stands for Basic Adult Leader Outdoor Orientation and it's a requirement for all Packs to have a BALOO trained adult at any Cub Scout den or pack outdoor event, including pack and Webelos den overnight camping. BALOO certification is reached after completion of two components—one online and one practical, hands-on session (that means you'll be camping). Both components must be completed to qualify as a “TRAINED” Cub Scout outdoor leader.

The online module which must be completed prior to the practical component contains basic information that will be built upon during the hands-on portion. Cool thing... YOU CAN DO THIS PORTION RIGHT NOW in the comfort of your own home by simply logging into your my.scouting.org account (the same one where you took the updated Youth Protection Training -- yeah, I'm looking at you!!) so you can go ahead and just knock that out of the way!  Talk about being proactive!

Why take BALOO?  

Great question! I'm glad you asked. Here's the simple explanation: We cannot camp without BALOO trained adults. It's that simple. 

As a Pack, we are not allowed to camp-out anywhere other than at a Council or District sponsored event UNLESS we have at least one BALOO trained adult. Currently, only have three BALOO trained adults ENTIRE PACK!  One more is registered but the real question is -- how is this possible in a Unit our size?!?

As a Pack, we have set a standard that we will have a minimum of two BALOO trained adults on every overnight event, because if there is only one.... and that person has to leave... the event has to end. The more BALOO trained adults we have in our Pack, the better off our entire program is.

We know not everyone can make every camp out which is why we need MULTIPLE PARENTS AND LEADERS to obtain their BALOO certification. This is not the time to rely on everyone else to ensure your Scout's program is the best one around -- THIS is a way YOU can make an IMMEDIATE DIFFERENCE!!!

"BUT I'M NOT A REGISTERED LEADER"

So what? You don't have to be!  Cool, huh? You only have to be an adult who wants to see our Pack's outdoor program continue and succeed.

"SO, WHAT'S THE CATCH?"

The catch is that... it takes a village... so BE THE VILLAGE!!  You need to take the training and then commit to being one of those BALOO trained adults who comes camping with us!  

"WHEN AND WHERE IS THE TRAINING?"

• Sept. 15-16 8am-11am at Hills and Hollows Denton  REGISTER HERE

• Sept. 21-22 6p-5p at Camp Burnett in Southlake REGISTER HERE

• Sept. 22-23 8a-12 at Hills and Hollows in Denton REGISTER HERE

Registration is LIVE RIGHT NOW.  Take the online portions sometime this month and you're SET... and my personal hero!  Who wouldn't want that designation?

Once you complete the course, you get a handy dandy business sized card that signifies you are indeed a BALOO trained adult. KEEP THAT IN YOUR WALLET!  It has to be on your person for the overnight events! Oh, and Pack leadership - we need a copy of that!

The only way to make our program be the best one around is to invest in it!  

It's full of some amazing leadership and parents just like you who want to see their son's units be awesome! Such a small investment with a huge payoff for everyone!

Parent/Committee Meeting Tonight

PARENTS WANTED!!! PLEASE ATTEND TONIGHT'S COMMITTEE MEETING TO HELP THE PACK MAKE PLANS AND DECISIONS ABOUT YOUR SON'S SCOUT ACTIVITIES.

The Pack Committee helps ensure that our Cub Scouts are offered fun-filled and meaningful events through the year.

Parents please attend and help enrich and strengthen our Pack. Topics include upcoming pack meeting plans, assignments for the next month and upcoming large-scale activities.

We have a few leadership roles we would love to have filled and just by coming to these meetings -- you could help the Pack tremendously!

The meeting is at 7pm at the Scout House on Monday, September 27. Come join us!

Raingutter Regatta

We are a couple of days away from one of our last Pack summer adventures -- the Annual Raingutter Regatta. This is our highly anticipated end of summer back to school blast and we look forward to seeing you all there.

Grab your kit at the Scout Shop TODAY! They're open on Saturday too!  If you have a sibling wanting to race, too, grab an extra for them... everyone can race!

The "official" rules and regulations on this event can be found by clicking {HERE} Be sure that you have logged into Scoutbook and RSVP'd so that we know you're coming. Big things to note -- use the kit, be sure to paint it so that the wood is sealed, don't attach the sail, but most importantly -- HAVE FUN! This is a super simple thing... and it's more about FUN than anything else!  Plus... ICE CREAM!

What to bring?

• Completed regatta boat
• Portable camp chairs for your family
• Drinks for your family (This is a BRING YOUR OWN DRINK event. No glass containers please.)

Each scout who participates earns a raingutter regatta patch for their brag vest.

Bears and Blades

One of the benchmarks in Scouting that younger Cub Scouts really look forward to each year is earning their Whittlin Chip and then carrying their own pocket knife!

Once Bears take a class this year, they, too, will be prepared with the right training to have the basics of knife safety down and will be ready to start whittling on their own.  Maybe you want to let them learn on an old one, and buy them their very own for Christmas.

Youth Protection Training Renewals

The BSA has announced bold, wide-ranging updates to its Youth Protection program as part of an ongoing effort to protect young people from child abuse. This starts with an enhanced online Youth
Protection training course ("YPT2") that all volunteers must complete.  But we like to make sure that we're all on the same page so we are asking ALL PACK PARENTS to complete this.  You do NOT have to be a registered BSA member to take YPT2

Even leaders and volunteers who took previous versions of Youth Protection training must log into My.Scouting.org and complete the updated Youth Protection course.

Who needs to take YPT2? 

• Anyone registered in any volunteer capacity with the BSA
• All Den Leaders
• All Assistant Den Leaders
• All Committee Members
• Plus, anyone who plans to attend a pack function or drive Scouts to or from Scout events. 
• THAT MEANS YOU!

Let me state again -- you do NOT have to be a registered leader to take Youth Protection Training.  But let's consider the facts -- the more Pack families that take YPT2, the more protected ALL of our youth are!

The updated course debuted in February 2018; if you took Youth Protection training prior to that, you’ll need to complete the updated course by Oct. 1.

If you are a registered leader, be sure to use your BSA member number when you log into your my.scouting account so that your updated training shows up in the Council records. It should automatically be updated in Scoutbook as well.

Not sure what your BSA member number is? You can find it in your profile in Scoutbook.

DEADLINE FOR COMPLIANCE:  OCTOBER 1, 2018

Don't let your YPT certification expire!!

And a word to the wise – don’t wait until the end of September to take the new course. There are nearly a million adult volunteers and thousands of Scouting professionals who have to take the new online course.

And many of them will wait until the last minute to take it.  (Shocker, I know!)

You don’t want to be the one stuck in a situation where the website is terribly slow (dial up anyone?), making the experience excruciating, or perhaps even crashes, leaving you without a valid YPT certification.  Don't let that be you. 

Take it early and avoid potential hassles!

Sleepover With America's Team

Save the date for the 2018 Scout Sleepover opportunity offered by America's Team. The greatest scout sleepover will be October 12. Don’t miss out on a night to remember at the home of our hometown team, the Dallas Cowboys! Every Scout and their family is welcome to come out and participate! Yes, the entire family can come!

WANT MORE FUN??   Access to the Dallas Cowboy Rally Day event which will be held the following morning is available for $12 per person.  Rally days are a fan fest at the stadium on Saturdays before the game. They have activities on the field, pictures and autographs with Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, Dallas Cowboys Alumni appearances and autograph opportunities. Typically these tickets are $35 a person, but for Scout Sleepover attendees, they will be offered for $12.

Deadline for us to register as a Pack is October 5, therefore, your RSVP deadline is September 10 with payment due at September Pack Meeting held 9/11. Once we have a total number of attendees, we will ensure we qualify for the discounted rate and will register our group together. Be prepared to pay September 11 (or before).

Happy Father's Day

A big shout out to all of the awesome dads that make up the true workhorse behind Pack 1910. Without you, we would be lost! Sometimes we perceive many benchmark holidays as fabrications by the flower, jewelry or candy companies for the obligatory "atta boy" shout outs but I believe Father's Day is a day that we should all recognize the important contributions that fathers make to their families.

We celebrate those dads that jump in with both feet and take an active role in parenting by being present. Your presence IS a present! By attending school functions, sports practices as well as helping supervise camping trips and even den meetings... we all thank you and wish you a Happy Father's Day!
