Pack Graduation Bridging & Picnic

The culmination and celebration of a year of hard work is something Pack 1910 leaders and scouts look forward to each year. Our annual bridging celebration is definitely one of our most anticipated events. Can you believe it is THIS SUNDAY?!  Everyone should have all their achievement recorded in Scoutbook (and email your leaders so they can approve) so that we can have everything prepared for your Scouts.

The Scouts will begin with a graduation ceremony where they bridge to their new ranks. We will either be where we usually have our Pack meetings or we might be on the Scouthouse lawn (just depends on the weather).  Everything starts at 3:30 pm. So, please have them present in their full field uniform by then. They will be presented with their new neckerchief, slides and handbooks.

Then, it’s time for some food and fellowship!

IN THE EVENT OF RAIN OR IF THE GROUNDS ARE TOO SATURATED FOR EVERYONE ON THE GRASS, WE WILL DEFINITELY BE HAVING ANOTHER DRIVE-IN EVENT IN THE PARKING LOT. AN EMAIL WILL BE SENT OUT BY 2PM WITH THE EXACT LOCATION OF THE EVENT IF THERE IS QUESTIONABLE WEATHER.

A gentle reminder that this will serve as the last Pack "Meeting" until September. We will distribute our Summer Calendar of events via e-mail and cover some of the fun activities at the bridging. You should have received your 2021-2022 calendar via e-mail. Check below for a link to that if you missed it!

So, to remind you:

Happy Mother's Day

Image result for happy mother's day gif

Happy Mother's Day to all the Akela Moms out there in Pack 1910! We owe you so much for not only putting up with the stinky, smoke-laden camp-out clothes to the finding of lost whatchamacallits...

...from the rides back and forth to den and Pack meetings to the planning of advancement

...from the recording of adventures to the patience of letting them learn to do their best even though you can do it faster

...from the selling of popcorn to volunteering for those little tasks to unburden the leadership

...from the smiles of support and encouragement to the mentoring of tomorrow's leaders

...from the snacks for den meetings to the last-minute projects to help fulfill

...from the sewing of patches to the labeling of all things

...from greeting at the registration tables to the finder of lost woggles

...from the input and feedback that makes our Pack grow to the simple things like meeting set up and breakdown

...for pitching in to do what we all do best... provide that maternal instinct to nurture, grow and protect.  Today, we celebrate you!

From all of our leadership... THANK YOU AND HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY

Happy Mother's Day to the Lion moms who have jumped into this new program because you knew it was something your little cubs would benefit from! You're already taking steps to ensure that this is the best program for him! We appreciate you!

Happy Mother's Day to the Tiger moms who have jumped into this program fearlessly and helped turn this into something their boys want to be a part of! We appreciate you!

Happy Mother's Day to the Wolf moms who are learning their way more and more through the program and start to realize the importance of Pack participation! We appreciate you!

Happy Mother's Day to the Bear moms who are learning now that the program is designed to lead these young Cubs into the steps of independence. Staying ever so close... but allowing them more opportunities to grow in the wild! We appreciate you!

And... last but not least...

Happy Mother's Day to our Webelos moms who are now learning to step back and let the boys experience the program as it was meant to be... supervised learning by doing. They're on the precipice of learning to lead each other. Just like the superheroes of the past, you've equipped them with the right equipment in their toolbelt by effectively letting the program teach them to be self-reliant! We appreciate you!

Simply put, we just couldn't do it without our MOMS!! I read a quote somewhere that said, "God couldn't be everywhere, so he created mothers." May your day be blessed!

Earth Day

Everyone on our planet has a duty and an obligation to protect it.  Sometimes a little friendly reminder is in order as well.  We live in a disposable society where everything is single-use, broken then replaced instead of repaired, convenience trumps all... but at what cost?  Earth Day, founded in 1970, is a day where we have that annual reminder to encourage one another to support sustainability, environmental protection and do more

Cub Scouts learn to Reduce, Reuse and Recycle but do we know what that really means?

Reduce -- use less. Buy reusable items so that your trash output is reduced.

Reuse -- find ways to repurpose what you have or let others reuse them -- donating old clothes is a great way to reuse things that still have lots of life in them

Recycle -- whenever possible, find ways to recycle everything you can.

Conservation is a big part of Scouting and what a better time to focus on that than on Earth Day!

In fact, Cub Scouts actually has a special award for dens going above and beyond to focus on that very thing -- The Cub Scout World Conservation Award.  Wolves, Bears or Webelos have the opportunity to earn this additional award.  Check out the requirements HERE.

Spring Family Campout

One of the things all boys look forward to in Cub Scouts is CAMPING and it's almost time! Make plans to join us for our Spring Family Camp Out April 9-11.

Are you a little “camping-shy”? Don’t let it hold you back!! Do it for your Scout– they’ll love you for it!!

Unless you have an open-ended bank account, don't run out and buy every piece of gear you think you need at REI (but if you just want to, please let me know and I'll give you my list, too!) The best thing to do when starting to acquire gear is to start small and simple so that you can discover what your family needs... grow from there. There are plenty of seasoned camping veterans in our pack that have gear to spare so don't hesitate to put the word out if you need to borrow something.

To begin, you need something to sleep IN, something to sleep ON, something to wear, personal toiletries and light. (Oh... and toilet paper! Don't forget the toilet paper! That's definitely something you never want to not have and need -- if we learned anything from 2020, let it be that you should never want to run out of TP.)

Cub Scout family camping is also referred to as "car camping." With a large enough vehicle, you're fortunate enough to be able to take just about everything AND the kitchen sink with you. But for the amount of time you'll be there, it's really not necessary. Though, a few creature comforts are definitely worth it!

For our campout at Worth Ranch, you won't necessarily need a ton of supplies.

Camping is definitely one of the highlights of any Cub Scout's year. Campouts are fun occasions where we get to come together as a Unit and we all have a blast. We have great food and a fun experience for the whole family.

Be sure to complete THIS ONLINE REGISTRATION FORM and submit payment no later than April 2 to Treasurer, Trish Chell.  My apologies for the email today about the registration deadline -- the deadline is FRIDAY (not tonight).

We will take a day hike up Kyle Mountain, have a campfire, let the boys whittle (who have their Whittling Chip), share in some stories and good food.  Be sure to check out the camping event on Scoutbook for more information.  This will be our last camping event for the 20-21 Scouting year.  The next opportunity to go overnight will be aboard the USS Lexington in September and our next campout will be in October/November this year.  So be sure you have the day saved and are ready to join us!

District Roundtable is Thursday

Leaders and parents, don't forget to join us this Thursday via Zoom for the Mustang District Roundtable training event.  Check Scoutbook for login information.

Leaders, please be in full field uniform with your cameras on.  If you can change the name designation on your Zoom account to read First Last - Pack 1910 that will enable the meeting host to ensure you are quickly added to the proper breakout room.

District Roundtable is where we discuss events, deadlines and news from BSA National, our Council and to talk about Mustang District events.  Once the large group announcements and discussions are made, we break into smaller rooms -- yours will be specific to Cub Scouts.  Our Cub Scout Roundtable Commissioner will lead us in a discussion on a predetermined topic, conduct some training and THIS is where the tribal knowledge is shared. This is where the magic happens.

Please join us -- my ONE WISH before leaving Pack 1910 is to win back to back attendance awards at Roundtable which means we have the most uniformed leaders at Roundtable.  Can we make it happen this month?  Join me and find out!

The show starts tonight, Friday, February 26, 2021 at 6:30 pm in the north parking lot of the United Methodist Church of Keller. Please enter from the WESTERN MOST DRIVE THROUGH as there will be another Unit on the east and we do not want to disrupt their business.

USS Lexington

Save the date for an epic adventure!  Pack 1910 is going on an overnight trip this fall aboard the Blue Ghost, otherwise known as the USS Lexington!

Date: Saturday, Saturday 25, 2021 – Sunday, September 26, 2021
Location: U.S.S. Lexington, 2914 N. Shoreline Blvd., Corpus Christi
Cost: $55 per person (dinner and breakfast included)
Dress code:  Field and Activity uniforms required for all Scouts.

An adventure awaits Pack 1910 when we board the USS LEXINGTON for an overnighter like no other!  We'll hear stories from the ship’s illustrious past – covering topics like kamikaze attacks, the manpower it takes to navigate an aircraft carrier, and being named the “Blue Ghost” by Tokyo Rose herself. The chapters of this history lesson unfold over 11 different levels within the ship, giving their curious minds a hands-on experience that reflects on the sacrifices made by that patriotic generation, builds camaraderie, inspires love of learning and is just plain fun!

Our itinerary serves as a lesson plan and includes tours of the ship, stories of historical events from her past, a scavenger hunt, a movie in the 3D MEGA Theater, LEX ghost stories, a commemorative patch, two trips through the chow line, bunking in original crew quarters, an unforgettable flag ceremony and so much more!

We will be sending out a list with an itinerary, packing list, directions and more through Scoutbook and here on the blog.  Campers must be 5 years old and will be divided at night with males sleeping in one sleeping quarters, female in another.  Be mindful of that when making reservations.

Check SCOUTBOOK for the event and register on the Google Form link.

Note: RSVP, paperwork and payment due by July 23.

For those going down Friday night, we will secure Group rates to the Texas State Aquarium to spend the morning and early afternoon at on Saturday before meeting at the base of the pier to embark on our journey.

Scout Sunday 2021

Scout Sunday is an observance of the connection between the BSA and its religious-oriented chartering partners.  It's held each year on the Sunday preceding the anniversary of Scouting in America (February 8). So "officially" it's February 8, but large church organizations can schedule this day any day in February. The United Methodist Church (organization) has officially scheduled it for February 14.

As part of our commitment to giving back to our Chartered Organization, our units (Troop 1910, Crew 1910, Ship 1910, Pack 1910 and Troop 1920) would generally provide volunteers at each of the services held on a specific Saturday and Sunday of each year to continually recognize the impact of Scouting within the church body of Keller UMC.

Youth would be greeters/ushers to help recognize and demonstrate our commitment to the Scout Law being Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Cheerful and, most importantly, Reverent.

Participation as a volunteer at our Chartered Organization (or at your home religious institution) on Scout Sunday would qualify Scouts to receive the Scout Sunday patch pictured above. However, we are still in a holding pattern this year to know what we're able to do. I will be communicate our involvement in observance of Scout Sunday at Keller UMC.

(Participation can be as much as wearing your full Scout uniform to service at your home church if you're not able to serve in another way.)  We are considering a service project to commemorate this date but will be communicating information as it's determined by church officials.

Stay tuned.

The Longhorn Council cares deeply about the health and safety of all Scouts and their families. All 2020-2021 weekend events have been redesigned to incorporate the latest CDC, State, and BSA guidelines and make them as safe as possible during the covid-19 pandemic. The updated event plans make it possible for Scouts, adults, and families to have fun in the outdoors while safely following current social distancing and hygiene protocols. Wreaths Across America

On Saturday morning, December 19, 2020, a wreath laying ceremony will commence at the Arlington National Cemetery to honor those veterans laid to rest there.  The Wreaths Across America story began over 25 years ago when the Worcester Wreath Company from Harrington, Maine initiated a tradition of donating and placing wreaths on the headstones of our nation’s fallen heroes at Arlington National Cemetery. Worcester Wreath Company continues to be a major supporter of the project donating over 25,000 total wreaths each year. Although well over 100,000 wreaths will be sponsored by individuals, businesses and groups from communities nationwide. Wreaths will be placed in all 50 states, at several locations in Iraq, and at 24 national cemeteries on foreign soil.

In 2016, when Texas State Cemetery in Austin, was added as a Wreaths Across America participant, Governor and Mrs. Abbott joined for the ceremony and wreath placements on veteran graves. His remarks to the volunteers gathered truly captured the patriotic mission of this program's mission:
“We're called on today and every day to remember our fallen heroes. We must remember their names, we must remember their lives and we must remember their sacrifice, because we are each entrusted with their legacy of faith in this great nation. May we always remember our troops in harm’s way still today, and may we never forget the price they pay so that we can be free.”

While we have Veterans Day in the fall and Memorial Day in the spring, our servicemen and women sacrifice their time and safety every single day of the year, to preserve our freedoms. And in many homes across the U.S., every day there is an empty seat for one who is serving, or one who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.

Pack 1910 has the amazing opportunity to be part of this movement recognizing our veterans this holiday season at the Oak Grove Memorial Gardens in Irving while similar ceremonies occur at over 400 other participating locations nationwide – a solemn tribute to those who served and those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Oak Grove Memorial Gardens began working with the Wreaths Across America project in 2010 with over 300 wreaths donated that first year and placed on the graves of veterans buried throughout the cemetery.

Due to coronavirus, there will not be a formal ceremony with the fire department and police honor guards, but we will still be present to do what we are tasked with -- placing wreaths on the graves of the designated veterans and throughout the cemetery.

What's asked of our participants is a small prayer of thanksgiving and remembrance be said as each wreath is laid upon the headstones and make an active gesture by reading the name of the veteran buried there. Honoring our commitment to never forget.

Pack 1910 was proud to be a part of this event the last several years and made a commitment to honor those who have served by continuing to participate each year. Duty to Country. A Scoutbook notification was e-mailed to the Pack. Please RSVP there so we know if we should expect you and your family.

We hope you consider participating in this community event of remembrance. What's 60 minutes out of the Christmas season, compared to our veterans’ years of service in locations far from home?

CUB-O 2021 - Deadline is approaching

Save the date and make plans to join us January 2, 2021 at Cub-O, the annual Cub Scout orienteering event held at Sid Richardson Scout Ranch.

Cub-O is the most popular orienteering event for Cub Scouts. A fun day of hiking and friendly competition for Cub Scouts, parents, and leaders. Orienteering, the use of map and compass, to find locations and plan a journey, has been a vital skill for humans for thousands of years. Thousands of people participate in the sport each year in local clubs and competitions. Longhorn Council has two events annually for orienteering. One is for Cub Scouts (Cub O), and one is held for Boy Scouts.

NEW Safety Changes for 2021

**No mass start crowd in 2021 - CUB-O has been redesigned to have Dens starting every few minutes all day long. The staggered start times by individual Dens and Packs will turn one big start into hundreds of small Den team starts throughout the morning and early afternoon.

**Roads Stay Open - Pick your Arrival Time! come out to camp or make a Day Trip of it. The roads will be open all day (with speed enforcement roadblocks), so you can arrive and leave when you need to.

**No Hole Punches to touch! The markers will be using cards with number codes printed LARGE, rather than hole punches. Cub Scouts won’t have to touch them. Just read from a distance and write down the code!

**No Hot Dog Lunch! - Switching to a totally prepackaged trail mix snack lunch instead! We will pick up the lunches with your patches at Check-In and add them to each Scout's daypack.

**Easy “How-To-Orienteer” Beginner Training Videos on YouTube! - No more crowds at Training! The Orienteering Committee is making several short videos on “How to Have Fun Orienteering for Beginners”! Learn on your own time or watch it on your phone on Saturday!

CUB-O is an event that teaches your youth to think for themselves while learning to read a map and hiking in the woods. It’s fast, exciting, and FUN. And it’s all Cub Scouts. The locations of 40-50 orange and white orienteering flags are marked on the map and you and your team will go hiking in the woods to find them – or most of them! Each flag now has a code that you’ll write your scorecard. Flags are worth 5, 10, 15, 20, or 30 points, depending on how hard they are to find. Your Den team will get a Cub-O competition map 20 minutes before the race starts. Then you plan a hiking strategy to find the most flags and score the most points in just 2.5 hours! You’ll stay warm ‘cause you’ll stay moving!

Cub-O is a team event for teams (Dens) of 3-6 Cub Scouts plus at least 2 adults. Each team must have at least two adults registered for Cub-O. Be sure to dress warmly in layers and bring lots of water! Bring a compass and a watch so you’ll finish on time. All registered participants will get a Cub-O patch, our latest 5-color competition map, lunch and a great day of orienteering. Maximum team size is 8 people.

Additional adult attendees (attending, assisting, or camping, but not competing) can pay $7 for lunch and liability insurance only but must register and be prepaid. Registrations must be received by 5:00 PM Wednesday, December 30th.  Siblings are $20.

Finish Line Sandwiches. Venture Crew 1910 will again have BBQ sandwiches available for purchase at the finish line. Includes: sandwich, bag of chips, and a drink. Cost to Pre-order is $5.50 per meal. A limited number of meals may be available on the day of Cub O for $7.00 each. Great care will be taken with food safety and Covid-19 protocols!

T-shirts are available for pre-order with your registration as well. Those are $12 each.

Be thinking if you're interested in attending. Our registration deadline is December 18.  Pack 1910 will cover registration for all Scouts. Parents and siblings will pay the additional fees for lunch/registration. If there is interest in camping, weather permitting, indicate that on the Google form. We will determine based on weather and attendance if we want to reserve campsite space.

To register, do so on the Pack's CUB-O Google Form HERE.

Again, the trail-mix snack lunch is included. Each team of 3-6 Cubs gets a Cub-O map half an hour before the race starts. Your goal is to hike in the woods and find as many of the 40 orange and white orienteering flags as you can.

Plan your strategy to score the maximum point total possible in 2 hours!

This is a rain or shine event: extreme inclement weather (ice or snow) may cause a one week postponement. Weather announcements will be made on the Longhorn Council Website and on our blog as well.

Sound like something you want to do? REGISTER ONLINE HERE.
