CUB-O 2023

Save the date and make plans to join us January 7, 2023 at CUB-O, the annual Cub Scout orienteering event held at Sid Richardson Scout Ranch.

POPCORN FUNDRAISING HAS COVERED REGISTRATION FEES FOR ALL CUB SCOUTS AND LEADERS!

Cub-O is probably the most popular Cub Scout orienteering event in North America! A fun day of hiking and friendly competition for Cub Scouts, parents, and leaders. Orienteering (the use of map and compass to find locations) lets Scouts plan a journey and has been a vital skill for humans for a millennia. Thousands of people participate in the sport each year in local clubs and competitions. Longhorn Council has two events annually for orienteering. One is for Cub Scouts (Cub-O), and one is held for Scouts BSA (SCORE-O).

Cub-O is a team event.  We'll organize registered participants into dens of 3-6 Cub Scouts (based on rank/age) and at least 2 adults.

Your team will get a Cub-O competition map 20 minutes before the race starts.  The topographic map shows the locations of 40-50 orange and white orienteering flags and their point values.  Each team will create a strategy and then go hiking in the woods to find their selected flags within the two hour race window. When you get to the target, you'll mark your score card with the hole punch attached to each flag.  Flags are worth 5, 10, 15, 20, or 30 points, depending on how hard they are to find or how difficult the terrain.

Yes, this event is in January. Yes the weather can be... well, temperamental. We've worn shorts one year... we've worn coats and gloves the next. Regardless of the weather, we have fun and everyone stayed warm cause we stayed moving!

Smart idea is to dress in layers which are easily shed and bring lots of water! You'll want to bring a compass and a watch so you’ll finish on time. All registered participants will get a Cub-O patch, our latest 5-color competition map, and a great day of orienteering.

This is a rain or shine event: extreme inclement weather (ice or snow) may cause a one week postponement. Weather announcements will be made on the Longhorn Council Website and on our blog as well.

Plan on about a 15-20 min drive from where Google shows the entrance to be.  For those wanting to caravan with a car buddy, we will choose a departure time from the Scout House closer to the event.

Big thing right now -- REGISTER BY OCTOBER 30 -- SCOUTS, LEADERS AND EXTRAS!

Fundraising has covered registration fees for all Scouts and leaders so if you KNOW you want to participate -- RSVP NOW on Scoutbook!  We want to hit the early bird discount for all who want to attend. A Scout is Thrifty. This early bird deadline ENDS October 31.

There's no way to really word this to where it makes sense so... here me out and let's give it our Cub Scout best, shall we?

If you, as a parent who isn't a registered leader, wants to attend and walk with your Scout AND you want to purchase lunch vouchers and/or t-shirts, you should go ahead and register YOURSELF right now and purchase ALL the extra items UNDER YOUR NAME and registration so that you're paying Longhorn Council direct and there isn't any kind of upcharge for processing fees (like WE would have to pay if you are wanting US to order your t-shirts for you).  We assess those credit card processing fees back to you. Longhorn Council does not.

However, even if YOU are paying for YOU, the Pack needs a headcount on Scoutbook of all who are planning to attend -- SOOOOOOOOO.... please visit the event there (you'll have to scroll through the calendar to January 2023) and leave in the comments all of the details requested.  If there are ANY questions, please don't hesitate to reach out.

Basically--- we will cover scouts and leaders.  Extras are on you and it's easier if you register yourself and pay for those on the front end rather than us having to upcharge you to pay for credit card fees on the back end.

We ALWAYS try to hit the Early Bird Registration discount.  Rate is $20 per scout and $15 for  adults. This includes a patch, liability insurance and a Cub-O keepsake map. Again, this ends October 31 so register before then.

T-shirts are available to purchase at registration ($15)

Lunch vouchers are available to purchase at registration (BBQ sandwich, chips, drink) ($9)

Additional attendees (attending, assisting or camping but not competing) can pay $8 for liability insurance only but all who come on property for the event MUST be registered in some capacity.

***We are required to have 2 registered adults for every den we have attending. If there is a doubt we will need you as a walking chaperone, please register!

Lunch is NOT included so please bring your lunch with you to eat before the race
