Committee Meeting - February 29

PARENTS WANTED!!!  PLEASE ATTEND MONDAY'S COMMITTEE MEETING TO HELP THE PACK MAKE PLANS AND DECISIONS ABOUT YOUR SON'S SCOUT ACTIVITIES.

The Pack Committee helps ensure that our Cub Scouts are offered fun-filled and meaningful events through the year.

Parents please attend and help enrich and strengthen our Pack. Topics include upcoming pack meeting plans, assignments for the next month and upcoming large-scale activities.

We have a few leadership roles we would love to have filled and just by coming to these meetings -- you could help the Pack tremendously!  It takes a village to pull of any event so your assistance is needed!

The meeting is at 7pm at the Hallelujah Center on Monday, February 29.  We will be finalizing the Pinewood Derby, the upcoming Pack meeting and Spring Campout.

Friends of Scouting

Longhorn Council is a nonprofit Cub Scout & Boy Scout council that provides services, programs, camps, and facilities to over 30,000 youth each year in 23 counties in North & Central Texas.

The council’s purpose is to provide the programs and infrastructure necessary to support Scout leaders as they work with your sons to deliver an effective Scouting program; including: 7 camps & program facilities (from 150 to 2500 acres), 21 major Cub Scout weekend programs during the school year, 19 day camps, 2 Cub resident camps, 9 major Boy Scout weekend events, 3 full Boy Scout summer camps & the Texas High Adventure Base, adult & youth trainings, recruiting support, offices in Hurst & Waco, records, registrars, and insurance.

Our projects are funded with Friends of Scouting contributions by Scouting families and business leaders, by popcorn and Camp Card sales, by activity fees, and by United Way.

So, as you can see, the Friends of Scouting is a critical fund-raising campaign that assists the Longhorn Council in offsetting program costs and enables them to continue providing quality service. The true cost of Scouting is much greater that what local dues, camping and event fees cover.

All packs, troops and crews are encouraged to participate in the campaign and we hope all families will take the opportunity to contribute.

Our campaign kicked off at the Blue & Gold Banquet on Friday, February 19. Collectively, we are only $35 away from meeting our goal of $1,500.  How awesome is THAT?!  WAY TO GO PACK 1910!!!!!

SO the next burning question is...

WHO WANTS TO BE THE SOURCE OF CELEBRATION?
PLEASE HELP US MEET OUR GOAL!

The pledge can be a one-time gift, it can be a monthly or quarterly contribution – however it makes sense for you to meet your commitment, Longhorn Council can accommodate various billing requests.  No gift is too big... no gift is too small...

As a reminder, the budget to run the Scouting program throughout the Council is about $6.3 Million. Of this amount, $1.5 million comes from the Friends of Scouting effort – half of this amount comes from businesses throughout the community and the other half comes from the generous support of the families that participate in the program. It costs the Council approximately $300.00 per youth to operate the Program. The money is used to provide:
  • Free Council Camps to the Scouting Units of the Longhorn Council
  • Maintenance and improvements to these campsites (Sid Richardson, Worth, Tahuaya)
  • Delivery of the Scouting Program to inner city youth that would otherwise not be introduced to the program
Please consider a pledge to the 2016 Friends of Scouting Campaign to help the Pack hit our goal. If you would like to make a pledge, please email our Pack's FOS Campaign Coordinator, Scott Minke, the pledge amount and what frequency you would like to pay this out or see me at an upcoming Committee meeting or Pack meeting and I will have spare pledge cards available.

Thank you so much from the bottom of my heart for making your pledge for our program!  I believe in the program.  Jump in... you will see!

If you want to see what some of the monies have been able to do this past year, please click here to see the What's New flyer.  It's also a great way to see some of the activities your sons can engage in when they become Boy Scouts, too!  Some of these upgrades are AWESOME!

In short, what we see is only about 20% of what actually goes on in Scouting.  We have professionals at all levels working to ensure this program is the best out there to prepare our boys for leadership and by giving them experiences they likely wouldn't have otherwise.

We need your photos!

Did you attend Blue & Gold?  Did you take some photos?  Maybe you grabbed a selfie with the Emperor's Royal Guard or next to Luke at the photobooth.  Did you get your son crossing the bridge under the lightsaber brigade?  If so, please send me your photos!  We want to see our scout families in action, having fun, hamming it up!

Crossover

At the Blue & Gold you witnessed our Webelos earning their Arrow of Light awards and this weekend they will cross from the Cub Scout Pack into the Boy Scout Troop.  As Paul Schneider said, it's really an AWESOME event to witness.  It's totally one of those events that they keep tucked away in the back of their minds that THEY want to experience and participate in so it helps give them that internal push to progress within their ranks. Besides, who doesn't think it's pretty awesome to see Indians in full headdress... to hear the beat of the tomtom... and see the true handiwork of a knotted bridge?

I don't want to give too much away because it's such an amazing experience for everyone involved.  Just know that you are ALL welcome and encouraged to attend.

Happy Birthday Baden Powell!

The father of Scouting would have been 159 today.

Happy Birthday to Lieutenant General Robert Stephenson Smyth Baden-Powell, 1st Baron Baden-Powell, OM GCMG GCVO KCB DL

He was a lieutenant-general in the British Army, writer, founder of the Scout Movement and first Chief Scout of The Boy Scouts Association.

In 1907 at Brownsea Island, he held the first camp to test out his ideas of boy leadership and the rest is history.  We wouldn't be here without the vision of one person -- proof that one person can make a difference.

Minute To Win It

We had a great turnout for the February Minute To Win It Pack Meeting. We had a great time and I sure hope you and your kids did too!

The skits were funny.  I loved the song.

You all participated and that made it a success!

We had a few fun games lined up:  First was the cup stacking competition.  36 cups, 60 seconds.  Only a few were able to succeed.

Then to break the cup feats, we threw in a cookie challenge.  The goal, lean back, hands on the floor and try (using only your facial muscles) to move a cookie from your forehead to your mouth.

Next we played reverse where you have to go in reverse with stacks of 25 cups and get the blue one from the top to the bottom, one, cup, at, a, time!

Then we followed it with Shake It Off where you're strapped to an empty tissue box filled with ping pong balls and you have to shake the balls all out of the box ... within 60 seconds.  I think, the best part for me, was watching the little siblings get into it.  They're JUST SO STINKIN CUTE!

Then we played a fun game called Switch-a-Roo where you have to use a straw to suck up 25 M&M's from one plate and transfer them to another plate.  We had some studs get down a pretty good rhythm on this one.  It was SO QUIET.  A great segue to the close of the evening.
