BALOO Training

Parents and Leaders - we are in CRITICAL need of more BALOO trained adults in our Pack.

What IS BALOO training?

BALOO training is the Cub Scout training required for any Cub Scout den or pack outdoor event, including pack and Webelos den overnight camping. BALOO certification is reached after completion of two components—one online and one practical, hands-on session (in layman's terms -- that means you'll be camping). Both components must be completed to qualify as a “TRAINED” Cub Scout outdoor leader.

The online component which must be completed prior to the practical component contains introductory and basic information that will be built upon during the camping. Cool thing... YOU CAN DO THIS PORTION RIGHT NOW in the comfort of your own home by simply logging into your my.scouting.org account (the same one where you took Youth Protection Training) and knock that out of the way! Talk about being proactive!

Why take BALOO?

Great question! I'm glad you asked. Here's the simple explanation: We cannot camp without BALOO trained adults -- not leaders.. but ADULTS (this means you). It's that simple.

As a Pack, we are not allowed to camp-out anywhere other than at a Council or District sponsored event UNLESS we have at least one BALOO trained adult. We should have at least one, if not TWO BALOO trained adults in EVERY DEN! Why?  Because eventually your scouts will be Webelos and you will need that to camp as a den.

As a Pack, we have set a standard that we will have a minimum of two BALOO trained adults on every overnight event, because if there is only one.... and that person has to leave due to illness or emergency... the event has to end. The more BALOO trained adults we have in our Pack, the better off our entire program is.

We know not everyone can make every camp out which is why we need MULTIPLE PARENTS AND LEADERS to obtain their BALOO certification. This is not the time to rely on everyone else to ensure your Scout's program is the best one around -- THIS is a way YOU can make an IMMEDIATE DIFFERENCE!!!

BUT I'M NOT A TRAINED LEADER

So what? You don't have to be! Cool, huh? You only have to be an adult who wants to see our Pack's outdoor program continue and succeed.

SO, WHAT'S THE CATCH?

The catch is that... we need parents to attend! You need to take the training and then commit to being one of those BALOO trained adults who... ya know... actually comes camping with us!  The more that attend from the same unit, you can really bring some exciting things back to our outdoor program.

WHEN AND WHERE IS THE TRAINING?

The next one is next weekend and is SO CLOSE TO HOME you are just crazy to not attend!  It'll be Friday, September 9 from 6:30 pm to Saturday, September 10 at 5pm at Camp Burnett in Southlake -- you can't ask for a more convenient location. REGISTRATION CLOSES IN TWO DAYS  REGISTER HERE

Once you complete the course, you get a handy dandy business sized card that signifies you are indeed a BALOO trained adult. KEEP THAT CARD IN YOUR WALLET! It has to be on your person for overnight events. Oh, and Pack leadership -- we need a copy of that!

The only way to make our program BE the best one around, is to personally invest in it!

BALOO is one or two evenings with some amazing leadership and parents just like you who want to see their Scout's unit be awesome! Such a small investment with a huge payoff for everyone! Plus if you attend, you'll become one of my heroes.

August Hike - Tonight

The first hike of the year is scheduled for this evening. Yep -- Pack 1910's Hiking Club is back in session!

We will meet at the Keller-Smithfield Node Park for a easy introductory hike to kick off our new Scouting year. Please convene by 6:45 so we can do an introduction to Pack hikes, a safety, water and gear check.

Let's face it -- one of the main reasons kids want to join Scouts is to get OUTDOORS! There's no better way to do that than getting out for some good ole fun on the trails. We want to continue to be a more outdoor-oriented Pack and keep our Scouts ACTIVE so we have pledged that we will keep the OUT in scOUTing!

Attendance at these events is completely optional, but... you know you want to come!

Usually held the 2nd Saturday of every month, Pack 1910 will have a Pack-wide hike at varying locations somewhere in the D/FW area. Hikes will be anywhere between 1-4 miles. Oh, and did I mention that we will be logging miles! Why? Because for logging miles -- the Scouts will receive AWARDS for specific miles reached along the way.

Hikers should be prepared with their six essential items for hiking:
  1. first aid kit -- not a full sized, a mini backpacking size is great
  2. FULL water bottle -- one that they can manage on their own
  3. sun protection (wide-brimmed cap and/or sun screen)
  4. whistle -- NEVER blow this unless it's an EMERGENCY
  5. trail food -- snack that is easy to manage, not melt, calorie dense
  6. flashlight -- I prefer a headlamp. Obviously they won't need it during the day, but we are teaching them to BE PREPARED so have them bring one.

Take this list and let your SCOUT gather these items into a lightweight backpack -- why? Because if you do everything for them, they lose the opportunity to learn for themselves! We will discuss the buddy system before departing. We will discuss the Outdoor Code AND Leave No Trace before and during the hike.

Meet Megan Schweitzer and Christie Pearson at the Keller-Smithfield Node Park near the pavilion.  If you plan to attend, please be sure you RSVP on Scoutbook so we know who all to expect!

All Pack events are FAMILY FRIENDLY but please do not bring the 4 legged kiddos unless they are service animals.

Two apps that are a great resource for hiking is the AllTrails app and Weatherbug.  AllTrails will turn your phone into a GPS tracker to help you track your mileage and pace as well as save your favorite trails.  Weatherbug helps you track weather and alerts you to lightning in your vicinity.

Speaking of WEATHER -- there is a chance for weather tonight so please be sure you check SCOUTBOOK for an update by 6pm on the status of tonight's hike.

We will always err on the side of caution and safety when it comes to our Scouts and Scout families.  If there is only a forecast for sprinkles, we will proceed.  In the event of lightning/thunder, we will postpone.

Wagon Kit Reservations Are Live!

Our Pack is POWERED BY POPCORN!  And we've got an awesome opportunity for you to make it easy to hit our baseline goal of $500 in sales per scout -- reserve a wagon kit.  These kits contain a preselected amount of inventory to provide a little bit of everything ready for you to load up in your wagon and make some sales!

We have ordered enough for 20 of these but will gladly make more if we have enough requests.  First come, first served. We will start a waitlist after the first 20 reservations are made.  Order below.

Religious Knot Classes Starting Soon

There are only two awards Cub Scouts can earn that they can take with them into Scouts BSA to wear on their uniforms forever -- one is their Arrow of Light award, the other is their religious emblem.

To encourage members to grow stronger in their faith, religious groups have developed a  religious emblems program. The Boy Scouts of America has approved of these programs and allows the emblems to be worn on the official uniform. We are blessed and grateful to have longtime Scouter and church member, Sheri Tull, facilitate the God & Me and the God & Family programs this year for our Cub Scouts enabling them to earn their religious knots.

They're called religious "knots" because they are a rectangular patch depicting a silver square knot on a field of purple. "Knots" are awards earned by leadership (and youth) for achieving benchmarks in training and/or leadership.

The program we will be utilizing was created through Programs of Religious Activities with Youth (P.R.A.Y.) The program helps young people to develop a deeper relationship with God and to understand how God is active in their lives and in the world around them. It is a Christian Education resource that uses Bible lessons paired with service projects conducted at the family level to help young people not only to grow in their Christian faith but to also express their faith by reaching out in love and in service to others.

Like all things in Scouting this shouldn't be a "one and done" process because faith --and your commitment to your faith-- should be an ever-evolving continual dialogue. This is why we have a Duty to God component for every rank in Scouts.

We offer this opportunity every other year.  While you can only earn the knot once, you can however continue to grow in your faith by continuing to take the classes when they're offered.

We will send out a Google Form for you to sign up.  From there, we will add you to the event on Scoutbook for reminders.  Each class has a workbook that is a required part of the curriculum.  We will open a payment link for those.  Once the class is completed, there are other awards you are welcome to purchase for your scout (a medal, a certificate, etc.) however, the knot for their uniform will be provided by the Pack.

The required workbooks are pictured below.

God and Me is designed for our Wolf and Bear ranks.

God and Family is designed for our Webelos and AOLs.

We will have our classes set up for alternating Wednesday nights.  Classes will start at 6:30 pm at the Scout House on their designated dates.  Doors will be open at 6:00 pm, however, in the event you wish to share a quick meal together (brought from home) prior to the class.

Again, this is OPTIONAL and this program will never be held in place of a den meeting. The religious component of Scouts is deeply personal and we are all not of the same faith. Therefore, Duty to God means something different for everyone. If you are not aligned with the Protestant belief doctrine, please feel no pressure to complete this course as it is NOT a requirement to complete the Duty to God requirement for each rank, it's simply to earn the knot. The knot is optional but shows your Scout has gone above and beyond the requirements to deepen their faith.

Since this is entirely optional, the costs of this program (supplies, workbooks and $ for a pizza party at the end) are up to the families participating. The pizza party will be coordinated by those attending (not me and not now).

Cost is $12 per participant and that provides you with your workbook and class materials.

RSVP on Scoutbook for your Scout by September 2 so we can order your workbook.

Angry Birds on Sunday

One of Pack 1910's Summer Events takes place this Sunday at 1:30 pm.  Come watch The Angry Birds Movie in the indoors of the Family Life Center at Keller United Methodist Church.

The whole Pack family is invited.  Great time to bring a friend, too.

Ship 1910 will be on hand to provide light concessions (please bring small bills).

Also, bring a pillow to kick back and enjoy the movie.

After the show, we will stack some boxes and use some balls and bands and see how we can construct a lifesize Angry Birds course.

Box donations are welcome at 1:00 pm.  If you can bring a roll of packing tape to help put them together, we'd appreciate it.  Additionally, if you can help build from 1-1:30, that would be even better.  For those donating balls, please be sure your names are on them so we can be sure they are returned to you.

We look forward to seeing you and your families Sunday at 1:30 for The Angry Birds Movie!
